If you compare their cover to the actual Metallica tune you can tell Heafy is trying to sound like Hetfield but isn't quite pulling it off.

I think it boils down to the individual. Phil Anselmo could scream himself silly and still pull out a melodic tone after many cd's and tours. Some have vocal chords that can take the punishment and others can't. Also realize thet these guys have the cash and access to doctors who can provide the care to keep those pipes working.
