 i bought an epiphone les paul back in 1979 brand new from guitar ctr. now after all these years i decide to take it out of the case and use it as one of my regularly played guitars, only to find it was never ever set up! thats right' i bought this lp standard and never even tested it out! i simply said '' thats sweet i'll take it!'' to make a long story short, how do i set set up this nice axe? i've never done a set up before, and this thing buzzes all over the fretted place! where do i start? or do i need to pay someone who knows how to? please help, john.

HI John, Idealy to set up the String lengths ( Intonation ) you'll need an electronic tuner:
Starting with the thick E string you tune it to E, then fret the same string at the 12th fret and it should be a higher E, if it isn't you adjust the string length adjusting screw and try again - when both the open E and the 12 fret E are bringing the tuner needle to the middle - the string length is correct
Repeat the procedure with all the other strings.

String Height adjustment ( Action ) is simply raising the string height untill you lose all the fret buzz
if you always take the lazy route

Buy a guitar and never play it? That's as impressive of a feat as some of the things Steve Vai does. You're a gifted man for I could never do anything like that. No matter how much I practiced at it.

even after going through that whole set up method that ''grambo'' laid out , i now have everything not buzzing except for the first fret of the high e string (1st string). only problem is the action blows , and if i move this comfounded bridge any higher it's going to max out and fall off! does this call for truss rod adjustments? my other les paul came off the rack perfect, but this axe in question is a real kick in the teeth! please help if you can, john ;)

I think if it was neck problems ( truss Rod ) it would buzz on more strings - I would suspect the nut - The white plastic piece - has the 1st string chewed into it

Yeah, it's difficult without seeing, but yes I've known strings to chew into metal bridges if the've been strung for a long time.
I would slacken off the first string and lift it out of the nut to see how far into the nut it has dropped ?
Also if you look at the neck from the side you might be able to spot what's going on

I've got this book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0879302917/sr=8-1/qid=1143875610/ref=sr_1_1/002-4036487-6109605?%5Fencoding=UTF8
pretty detailed, I haven't found time to read it all the way through, so I don't know if I can help you. but if you're really serious about this guitar, I'd take it in. there is no reason that you should need the action all the way up, it probably needs something with the truss rod or nut. if you want it perfect though, you'll probably need to take it to a tech.

That's the reason that you can give out rep points. I gave him some, and heck, it wasn't even my problem. I just got here. So you, by all means, should rep our friend Grambo.

Hi Grambo!
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

A long time ago I bought a Gibson SG from a shop in Bristol UK, and quite honestly they saw me coming.
I struggled with it for years, it was way before computers and internet.
It was the invention of Electronic Tuners that enabled me to deduce that it was a Gibson neck on a dodgy body and the bridge had been drilled a 1/4 inch too far forward.
After much consideration I pulled out the bridge studs - filled in the holes and re-drilled it.
After re-assembling it, it sounded beautifull
It was a very frustrating time, but it taught me a lot about the physics of guitar strings. I have a lot of faith in Electronic tuners

There are reasons that I'm not a big fan of Gibson guitars. That book 6_strng suggested is the guitar tech bible. Whether you decide to set it up yourself, or have a good shop do it, is up to you. I can't recommend GC for anything.

What are they? I only ask because I don't much like Gibsons either.

I can't believe some of the horror stories I've heard about gibson.. the reason why I can't believe them is because I've got a gibson, and I love it to death!
