yeah I saw it.. it just looks so yummy but apparently doc thinks a korg D1200 would be better. those are just so expensive though.

the only thing I see with the boss is that it only has a 128mb flash card... that'll fill up fast.. but I suppose you can just export it out to your computer to make room for more recordings.

If you are halfway serious about recording you will grow out of the Boss machine very quickly. The specs are also quite shoddy.

Go with the Korg D1200 if you want a portable studio in a box. it will do 4 tracks simultaneous recording at 16 bit (or 2 at 24) and will play back 12 tracks simultaneously. It also has a USB 1 port (Ok for 3-4 min songs, slow for big projects) and loads of effects for mixing etc. The pre-amps are not that great (but OK) however I have been known to pay 3 or 4 times the price of a D1200 for one pre before now so waduyou expect for the money !!

You also get www.korgstudios.com thrown in for free !

Any questions give me a knock !

The Korg D1600 mk II (with the USb port) are nice to and have a touch screen. If your budget can stretch to it they are very nice bits of kit. I have owned both the Korg.

but the reason i want this unit is kind of for basic things and some features attracted me to it like the mics in the front to record rehearsals because we play alot of different things when we're coming up with new song ideas and this way it will be easyer to remember them and also the drum machine and the bass simulation so i can get better at composing my own songs and the built in cosm effects would be good too becasue i wouldnt have to carry any effects units i also basically take my guitar wherever i go and this unit can fit in my gigbag so if i get an idea i can record it and i wont forget it its size so i can bring it to my friends house where we have band practice and even to school if i ever need to it just seems so appealing and the price is really good. I know that im going to grow out of it eventually but id like to think it will last me a while a but also if anyone has some negatives about this unit that they know about id like to hear them too just in case the negatives beat out the positives in the ways i plan to use this unit

Please don't think Im just being an asshole. You can get much better bang for your buck with other brands.

The sound quality is crap, the flash card is whey too small, the interface is dreadful (in that once you know what you are doing you find loads of parameters you just can't alter), the built in drums are very limited as are the bass sims. The built in mic is also rubbish, you are better off with a tape-recorder.

If you want more opinions go to homerecording.com and ask there though you might want to put on your flameproof pants first !

This thing is not quite as good as the Zoom recorders.

oh man nothings as easy as it sounds anymore, do you got any suggestions of units with a drum machine built in effects possibly portability and im not sure yet but i believe my budget could only stretch to around $800 canadian maybe more but i could probably try ebay i dont know what to look for but i dont want to use computer recording software because it seems very complicated and my computer would probably need alot of upgrades too

does it have drums though? that was one of the turn-ons of the boss for me. so that I could be a "one-man band" without spending several hundred dollars on a seperate drum machine.

also, I'm really only wanting to stick a mic in front of my amp and record that way. I don't really have a big need for on-board effects and pre-amps.

I knew a guy who used one of those big-ass 16-track boss recorders as an effects unit when he played live.. it doesn't sound bad to me. of course, those units are over $1000, so they may have put cheaper components into the BR-600

so doc, what do you think of recorders from the tascam line? as far as I know, isn't tascam made by korg (or vice-versa?) but they are a hell of a lot cheaper. what do you think of this one?

Generally Tascam make nice kit, I kicks the crap out of the Boss one though it is not as nice as a D1200. I know Tascam are owned by a company called TEAC and Im pretty sure they are not owned by korg.

I started doing multitrack recording on a Tascam 424 mk III portastudio (Which PRSplaya is currently selling at a very reasonable price). That would also not be a bad place to start.

yep, they have a built in drum machine, and a dedicated guitar input and guitar modeling and a touch screen and you can record 8 tracks simultaneously and the mk ii has a usb out to a computer. You can get them second hand for about 600 usd. I had one and they are great. The sound quality is also really good.

If you don't care about usb connectivity (you can sneaker-net tracks to a PC via a CD) the mk i is cheaper (and looks better IMHO).
