I am really stuck on the look of the black and chrome.

is it easy to find a chrome pickguard for just a black strat?

Basically it all comes down to your preference like many people have said... A far as tone woods go... there is a difference... and the main difference is price. You're going to pay more for Mahogany, Alder, and Ash... They the basic three tone woods. Mahogany gives a rich deep resonant tone and Alder and Ash have a similar bright clear trebly tone... Ash is slightly lighter than Alder making it more expensive... The main thing to look at when getting a starter guitar is basically the features. A starter guitar is a guitar that you're going to grow out of eventually.... You want a guitar that is fairly inexpensive.... A solid wood guitar would be the best quality... Most cheap strat copies and cheap Squires are made out of plywood... very poor tonal quality... but once again. It's a starter guitar, you're not going to be playing huge sold out concerts with the guitar you just need something to learn on... then when you figure out whether you want to stay with guitar or not... you can choose to get a higher priced, higher qualitu instrument... so just get the best value you can right now and get the most out of it! good luck!

one thing u might want to consider is how sure you are that the guitar u are going to buy suits the style of music u want to play, and how sure u are that u will still want to play that stlye later. if u are not sure i would advise a cheaper guitar so that when u have discovered what u want from a guitar u have the money to spend on it. i for instance got an epiphone less paul when i started cos i was told they were good. but now feel a bit fustrated because i would love a floyd rose locking trem, and i get annoyed that the upper fret access isnt very good. this is not to say it is not a good guitar, if u play blues or rock or generall chordy stuff its great got good tone (for the money) etc. but im not so sure its right for me.

to be honest, I've never played a better $200 guitar than this one: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Electric?sku=519894

the powder black color looks so cool. very goth/metal looking. of course, I don't know the style of music you want. but it's reasonably versatile too... if not that one, then go for the lower end ibanez. OR an agile, which I have not tried, but have heard so many good things about because you get soo much bang for the buck.

I have not heard many good things about squire. and if you really only want it because of the chrome pickguard, you can rest assured that many places sell aftermarket pickguards (installing them may be a challenge, but if you're the do-it-yourself kinda guy, then go for it!) heck, you can even get diamond plate pickguards.. how cool is that?

i have an acoustic that i am learning on at the moment. I just know i will soon be ready for an electric so i just wanted to start leaning about them now.

I am a pretty big GnR fan. but i like all kinds of music. country blues rock I like it all and would want to be able to play all of them an not be limited. I have a friend that has the les paul and it just feel strang or really heavy in the back hard to play while sitting. untill i saw the chrome and black i did not really like the looks of the fender body. but it is growing on me to more that i look at them. All i really know is that that body style feels better in my lap. my brother in law also has les paul gibson. and he always plays stand ing for that reason. I am a set on the couch and watch TV playing to loud that it pisses my wife off kinda guy .. if my guitar is out I always pick it up and play. I am learning the GnR tab and sheet music when i have some songs down i know i will be egar to get an electric...
