I am really stuck on the look of the black and chrome.

is it easy to find a chrome pickguard for just a black strat?

Basically it all comes down to your preference like many people have said... A far as tone woods go... there is a difference... and the main difference is price. You're going to pay more for Mahogany, Alder, and Ash... They the basic three tone woods. Mahogany gives a rich deep resonant tone and Alder and Ash have a similar bright clear trebly tone... Ash is slightly lighter than Alder making it more expensive... The main thing to look at when getting a starter guitar is basically the features. A starter guitar is a guitar that you're going to grow out of eventually.... You want a guitar that is fairly inexpensive.... A solid wood guitar would be the best quality... Most cheap strat copies and cheap Squires are made out of plywood... very poor tonal quality... but once again. It's a starter guitar, you're not going to be playing huge sold out concerts with the guitar you just need something to learn on... then when you figure out whether you want to stay with guitar or not... you can choose to get a higher priced, higher qualitu instrument... so just get the best value you can right now and get the most out of it! good luck!
