Oh, I reckon a lot of the stuff from "Ghost Reveries" could be classified as black metal. On the other hand, I'm anything but an extreme music fan - death metal, black metal and grindcore all sound fairly similar to me :o .

I own that cd in particular.. I don't think it's black metal, it's way too melodic. black metal is more... well.. black! I dunno, I'll check into it later.

It's actually the furthest from black metal out of all of their releases. The only releases that could be easily linked with black metal would be their first two. The general tone of the music and the vocal style were much more like black metal then. These days the tone has much more color to it and the vocals are deeper. As far as compositions go, they have next to nothing in common with black metal.

Look guys if you're gonna talk about punk then get it right.

The father of punk is generally considered to be Malcom Maclaren. "The Great Rock and Roll Swindle" was basically MacLaren's claim that he created punk rock and tbh it's pretty difficult to disagree with him on many points.

Punk seemed to come out of nowhere. There were no bands that acheived any sort of recognition playing that sort of music with that "feck you" attitude before the Pistols. Whether MM did or didn't invent the genre became unimportant for those who embraced the style, music and attitude. "Punk" took on a life of its own helped by a over zealous media reaction and the fairly predictable welcome in the arms of disenchanted youths.

The "punks" you're talking about now exist across the world. Our old bass player makes a living playing bass with Peter and the Test Tube Babies (formed in 1977!) with gigs at punk-revival festivals all over the world.

Punk is just another marketable commodity and people follow it for various reasons. It has links with the far right and yet has also been the focus of left wing political movements in the late 70s and early 80s.

The music varies from sublime to awful. "Never Mind the Bollox" is imo still one of the finest rock albums ever made. Listen to Steve Jones' guitar. That guy could really play and what a sound he got. Lyrically they were really strong and John Lydon was an brilliant front man.

Don't be too hard on the "Punks", "emos" and "Goths". They're just looking for something they can get hold of, something to hang their lives around, something they can feel a part of.

Yeah, I find it sad that someone thinks Led Zep is a clothing brand but in some ways it isn't so far from the truth. Led Zep isn't just a band anymore it's a "brand" like the Stones, like Metallica, like any performer that makes money out of marketing T shirts and the like. I think it's the word "brand" that depresses me most of all, that this is what we've come down to. The music is less important than the logo. Now that's really sad.........

Cheers

Dick

Not quite. There are plenty of people that know about it. It's just not something that you can find as easily as on the radio or on television. It's something that has to be found rather than given. It's kind of a tense topic as it's easy to portray one's self as a hypocrite, especially since there are more than my own opinion on what makes metal "real metal." And yes, there are metal bands that can be found on television, I'm not going to say it's impossible for mainstream to include metal. And I'm not really even against the music in the main stream, so this isn't some stupid anti-mainstream talk. Just that there's far more to the scene than anything you'll find on tv since most of it doesn't market nearly as easily as say Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth, In Flames, and Dimmu Borgir. Especially since they're willing to dumb their music down to help it market easier.
