On a mufti day, you wear "civvies" to school instead of your uniform (most schools in Australia have uniforms - don't know whether it's the same in the US).

6strngs, you're lucky that so many people in your area like Floyd and Zeppelin, or at least pretend to. Where I come from, everybody wears New Found Glory or The Used t-shirts. If you asked them the name of the longest piece of music they've ever listened to, most would name "Jesus of Suburbia" by Green Day. Most would also immediately associate "Beethoven" with a children's movie about a St. Bernard. The longest novel that most of the girls have read is "Looking For Alibrandi"; some of the more cultured gentlemen have read the latest issue of FHM or Playboy cover-to-cover.

I live in a cultural wasteland! I'd love to see some more '60s prog rock shirts around.

All this talk of posers, scenesters, conformity and non conformity has me thinking, you can't really avoid conformity. Either you conform, or you conform by not conforming like everyone else does. All you can really do to beat the system is just not give a crap. Just dress and act in a way that you are comfortable with, and don't worry about what anybody else does or thinks. As the song says, what's the point of not conforming if it changes you? Just be true to yourself.
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

well.. finding zeppelin and floyd shirts used to be hard to do. then hot topic started carrying them. so then all these wanna-be's started wearing them, of course, there are those who actually know who they are, and bought the shirt becuase they actually like the band. but anyways, it became so popular that now even places like mervyns is carrying them, so you see like 8 year old kids running around with them on... and they DEFINATELY don't know who they are, they are just trying to be cool like the high school kids who are all wearing these shirts.

here's the way things go around here. the elementary kids are trying to be cool like the junior high kids. the junior high kids are trying to be cool like the high school kids. the high school kids think they are all that, while subconciously trying to be cool like the college kids. and the college kids are trying to be like adults (some are, the other ones are just out getting drunk and laid every night) and adults are trying to be young like their kids.. it's a perpetual circle of poserism

who's he?

I don't like these shirts

I don't really know why, but I see everybody wearing them.. I just don't like them.. or really have much of a clue who bob marley is.. in fact, somehow when I look at the shirts I'm like "that's a bob marley" shirt, but I have no idea how I know that since I really don't know who bob marley is, let alone what he looks like. the fact that that image was the first result when I typed in 'bob marley shirt' on google is really what confirmed to me that that actually is a bob marley shirt.. I still have no idea why or how i know that.

I'm wearing a horrible t-shirt with a picture of a DJ scratching a turntable, titled "Urban Soundz" (yes, soundz with a z *shudder*). It's so awful, you've just got to love it!

I always dress/wear what I want, hell I only wear skater shoes cause I find them more comfortable than running shoes and ect. But I also find that people who say they wont do something because its a trend are trend folowers themselves.

I'm not punk at all, so I don't take offense. I thought the whole point of the movie, atleast to me, that the punk lifestyle is fake.

Dude, that is the biggest myth ever...girls like guys in bands...bollocks dude...perhaps they guys in good bands, but if you say you play in a band, and she is not able to see you play live gigs, she is just gonna dismiss your band as a crap, joke.

Exactly, and it gets you know where, punks just see it as a cool person in a cool movie they wanna be like.

Ya. Me and my drummer decided that too. Or at least something similar. I think we can all agree that Sid Vicious is the punk symbol, and he never learned how to play his damn instrument. So what does that say about punk?

i think teh punx sybmol is teh gren dayz.

On a serious note, my real thoughts: weren't the sex pistols big in the mid-to-late 70's? If so, I think punk from back then was pretty legitimate. Back in them days, look who there was to contend with. Led Zeppelin, and bands trying to be Led Zeppelin. What's the opposite of Led Zeppelin, you ask? A band that can only just barely play their instruments. I think punk used to make sense, now it does not. The way I see it, punk doesn't describe the musical style, it describes the feeling of wanting to do the opposite of everything that's going on. If what was once punk becomes the next big thing, it is no longer punk. It is pop. And if what was once pop becomes obscure and only available if you search for it, it is punk. In fact, now that I've worded it like that, the term "pop-punk" just makes my head hurt.

I could never bring myself to like the Sex Pistols. Mostly because Johnny Rotten supposedly got the lead singer's gig because he was spotted in the street wearing an "I Hate Pink Floyd" t-shirt

Punk, back in the day, was about making a statement of rebellion. And that's ok, but the only problem is that it's easy to date because the things that they rebell against aren't going to be around forever. Things change. So the "punk" these days is only labeled as punk, but it's not genuine punk. It's just not of that era. It's become an image thing, look as ridiculous as you can, don't learn to play your instrument, be n the business about 2 weeks, make more money than Steve Vai. Ahem, as I was saying, the image of rebellion has taken it over. And the exact same thing has happened to black metal. When black metal first came out it was just the same. Basic, veritably talentless music based around rebelling. These days it's just a mass of douches that have to be "grim" and look "kvlt" and make god awful sounding demos and what not using recycled riffs because they think the point is that it's not supposed to sound good. Black metal and punk are two dead genres.

I beg to differ. black metal is not talentless. though it really depends on what bands you consider black metal. but when I think of black metal, the first (and only) band that enters my mind is cradle of filth. and, I haven't heard a whole lot of their stuff, I own one cd, and I can it's definately not talentless. I mean, so of it is, but then you get these catchy little sections here and there. I think the lyrics are a bit lacking, and sure singing about satan and midian, and cthulu is appealing to these wanna-be goths, but it's just a bit stupid in my opinion. anyways, they do have quite a bit of talent in their music, though it isn't always in the guitar solos, it's more in how the song is arranged and put together, how it's played, and how the band as a whole works together to get the message out loud and clear, even if the message is kinda stupid.

Ok, I was referring to when black metal began and I was also referring to black metal. Not wanna-be goths. And as I stated in my previous comment, when black metal FIRST came out, it was veritably talentless. Even to date, most of the black metal bands in the world are veritably if not completely talentless. Now, I'm not saying all of them are, but when black metal began, it wasn't about trying to master your instrument. Punk influence played a suffice role in black metal's beginnings and as a side effect the music was basic. And as I said before, it was originally based around a rebellious message, namely anti-christianity. The corpse paint rose with the music and soon black metal became bound with it. These days the message that was originally being made has faded. Why's that? Because no one that's making black metal anymore was there when it was being made. The most influential of black metal bands have either disbanned, developed acute tendonitis, passed away/been killed, are in jail, or have converted to death metal. Most of the people that make black metal anymore just take a fraction of the message (Satan as seems to be the most popular), put on corpse paint because it's "grim" and play garbage. Others like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir have been selling black metal out. But the problem there in lies that real black metal is dead. It died long ago when all the prime influences either disbanned, developed acute tendonitis, passed away/been killed, are in jail, or have converted to death metal. A lot of the old stuff (basic as it is, bad production and all) is actually still pretty enjoyable to listen to, provided the mood is right, but these days people just go out of their way to recreate something that's long since passed.

Don't forget Opeth. I mean, for the most part, I can't stand black or death metal, but Opeth - in terms of talent, they're just something else
