I just want to say that I read most of the post in this thread and while not agreeing with most of you on what you think the greatest band ever was, will say this. I have listened to most of the bands listed and have found at least some of their songs to be either entertaining or enlightening. I don't know how we've gotten so hung up on green day, since they play about the most ridiculously simple of music, they aren't real punx, listen to nofx or rancid or black flag or tilt or bad religion. that's real punk, the issues back then where the same as are now. As for me I look for a bands compositional ability, energy and live show. I don't care if someone can go home and write the most intricate music on q-base if they can't even play a bongo drum. I used to like Phish untill they broke up, their music had this new element, this way of entrancing the crowd of up to 200,000 people. THat is a huge HUGE live show, and many of the fans happen to be music teachers or scholars, not some 13 year old girl who wants to have a greenday baby. Since Phish broke up I've taken it quite personally and now am pissed at them. So now I've found a band quite by accident that have just hit the bigtime, they came out of PHilly and their name is the DIsco Biscuits. These guys are machines I mean real fricken good. They play fast they play technical, they write songs that make you forget about everything. Their shows are incredible, they'll play for like four hours straight take a break come back play four more hours, till sunlight and then do two encores without any repeats and thousands of people are dancing and jumping around the whole time. The most crazy thing about them is that you can get all of their music and shows for free legally, I don't know how they do it, but their #$%@ spectacular. They are in it for the long haul too, so if you want to be cool I suggest checking these guys out. I know their name is strange, I thought they'd suck because of it but they'll blow you away!!!

^^^ It's easy to entrance a crowd of 200,000 music teachers and scholars...... especially when they're all ex-hippies and are tweaked out on whippits, X, coke, and/or marijuana..... I've been to a few Phish shows when they've played Bonaroo... jam bands are magnets for pot heads. haha. But hey... I love(d) Phish and Trey Anastacio... I'm just saying that its not hard to entrance a crowd full of tripheads.

What type of music do your bands play (I'm guessing that at least one of them plays death metal ;) )?

Most of it's death metal or at least my death metal influence shows through. Of all the projects I have, two of them are primary and both show a lot of death metal influence.

I didn't even bother read through all of this because it was rediculous. But you really gotta define the meaning of 'the best band ever'.

The most popular? The most influential? The most talented? The most financially successful?

Being Popular and being influential are definitely not the same thing, but they go hand in hand. If a band is extremely popular, it's going to influence music alltogether, and people around the world along with it.

But a band can be very talented, yet not very popular and not very influential. A band can also have next to no talent, only make somewhat of an influence on the music industry, but be extremely popular and extremely financially successful.

The most popular band and the most financially successful band are based on numbers, so they're strictly FACTUAL. The most influential and also the most talented is extremely debateable (sp?)

everyone has their own opinions and no offence to any greenday fans out there. but lets face it, green day are shocking in terms of musical ability and awfully fake on all other fronts. AND WHAT **** AT GIBSON DECIDED TO BRING OUT A "BILLIE JOE" SIGNATURE AXE!!??!!

the same kind of dude that gave the guy from good charlotte a signature axe from PRS and the same dude from fender that gave the guy from blink 182 a signature guitar......... it's marketing... doesn't really reflect on their ability. it's just companies jumping on the punk bandwagon and appealing to lost young teens just like the respective bands that those people play for... not a fan of any of those bands... in fact i hate them... but whatever works i suppose....

and the greatest band in the world is probably a band none of of us has ever heard yet... that.... or the alvin and the chipmunks band.

There is a formula for the best band ever my friend!

1. Get a big blender
2. Throw in a john petrucci with a few ernie balls and mesas
3. Grade in 1)John Myung and 1)Mike Portnoy
4. Throw in a Jordan Rudess. If you are out, a Kevin more will do just fine
5. Add a dash of James Labrie
6. Blend the living s**t out of it.
7. Serve through the speakers of your choice

I hate to post on threads about "best band" "best guitarist"
Because you are all right, and there are so many out there I like, I guess I listen to lynyrd skynyrd the most.
