I gutted my squire strat and am considering dropping in fender pick ups as well as fender tunning pegs...are there any decent books/sites to check out on how to rewire the thing. it's pretty much in pieces right now.

hey, while you've got the guitar in pieces and everything, can you tell me if squier strat's bodies have universal pickup cavites, or if you can only put single coil pickups in.

Most cheap strats have whats called a "pool" or "tub" routing... which is what you said... a universal routing. I personally have never seen a cheap strat that had anything different. Mainly because those types of guitars are much cheaper and easier to mass produce. If you're looking at a project guitar that you can make into an HSH configuration check out ebay for an early to mid '90s American Fender Strat body... they went through a rough time at that point and made a lot of bodies in the "tub" configuration... don't get a strat copy, as most of them are made of plywood or something similar... as for the original question... check out "The Guitar Players Repair Guide" by Mr. Erlewine its a great resource for any guitar player... and it will give you all the info you need.

I really like my ibanez GRX40, and would not mind using that as my project guitar, but she's my first guitar, and I want to keep her stock. I was thinking about buying another one though, the GRX20 is pretty much the same thing except with a H/H configuration instead of a s/s/h but it should have the same pickup cavity. I might also go for a cheap rear mounted ibanez RG that has H/S/H or a front mounted ibanez RG, I just like the body shape better then strats, it's more pointy and metal looking, which is what I want to make the guitar into, a metal playing machine.

I'm trying to find one used for a decent price, it's proving a little harder then I thought... I can't buy off ebay, cause I'm under 18, so my parents would have to buy it, and then I pay them back, but my mom is completely anti-ebay for some reason... so I've been checking craigslist, and I'm still waiting for a good deal to come up.

hey ponyone, I've used a kramer before, it's a nice guitar, but the neck was very V shaped, which I didn't like too much. all the ibanez ones that I've played have been very slim necks, which I like alot. though, I do like the sound of them
looking at kramers, I think this one would be good with a rosewood fretboard, and that this one would be good with a floyd... oh well

It looks like they'll be getting a big shipment on the 8th... you may want to check back then, because they've had both those guitars as you wanted in the past.

There's also this:

and this:
http://www.musicyo.com/product_specs.asp?pf_id=355

The former of course being much more strat-like but pleasantly cheap, and again, you can just route out the neck. The latter has the pickup config but lacks a Floyd, which IMHO suck anyway.

actually the second guitar you posted only has a H/H not a H/S/H...

I was actually looking at this one:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/512496/
but it's a bit pricy, I mean, I will still need to have money left over to buy the new tuning machines, the new pickups, the sheilding material, and the various other things I'd be planning to do to it... of course, there is always this guitar:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/519417/
which I know has a universal cavtity, and then I can do something cool to it like a diamond plate pickguard (doubt I'd actually do that, but it sounds cool in theory)

This doesn't necessarily translate into good tone. I tore the QuadRail out of my Kramer's bridge and replaced it with a DiMarzio Tone Zone; world of difference. I left the neck in because I don't use the neck position much.

Physically they have the same footprint as a regular humbucker; they look a bit bigger because they have a mounting ring around them and there's also a single DualRail in the mid position that looks like it's part of the neck pickup in one of the shots.

You can buy them from the company, they're okay, they have no hum whatsoever which is sweet, but I find them a bit dry tonally for my tastes. Good for metal though, I suppose.

Ohhh, well thanks Pony.
