Most cheap strats have whats called a "pool" or "tub" routing... which is what you said... a universal routing. I personally have never seen a cheap strat that had anything different. Mainly because those types of guitars are much cheaper and easier to mass produce. If you're looking at a project guitar that you can make into an HSH configuration check out ebay for an early to mid '90s American Fender Strat body... they went through a rough time at that point and made a lot of bodies in the "tub" configuration... don't get a strat copy, as most of them are made of plywood or something similar... as for the original question... check out "The Guitar Players Repair Guide" by Mr. Erlewine its a great resource for any guitar player... and it will give you all the info you need.
