Know the feeling, I've been playing about ten years now, for the first few I really got myself confused. I wanted to learn everything, now!! Anyway, my advise to you would be to chill, take a step back, ask yourself where you would like to be in say, 6 months and pick three or four areas to focus on eg, new chords, a couple of new scales, a new technique or two, then go at them like a lunatic until you know every scale position and chord that you have learned like the back of your hand. You'll probably find that you'll pick up some others along the way! I found this way much more rewarding. If you are really struggling with getting to grips with the basics I would say get yourself a few proper lessons, this way you'll have someone to guide you and explain any jargon or charts that you are finding hard to understand. The way I see it, the more stressed you're getting with not being able to work stuff out, the more likely you are to say sod it and give it up for good!!! Take it slowly and it will come to you before you know it!
Hope this is some help.
Oh, and the beginners lessons on this site would be a great starting point too!!!

Yes thanks very much for your advice, the problem is with me is that apart from strumming an Am, C, Dm, Em or G apart from strumming the chord shapes out of a book I know nothing else still, for me there really is too much jargon that I just can't comprehend maybe I'm a dummy but I just can't do scales I have basically no guitar knowledge at all, all I find myself doing is copying chords of well known songs and strumming away with them trying to form new tunes but as I say I am frustrated and pissed off big time because I am desperate to learn the guitar at the very least better than what I do now at least so I have a knowlege of how to play, but I need it in really basic terms to understand otherwise I am totally lost and will probably be this way for good.
Thanks for your advice and comments anyway, cheers.
P.S I did attend a few lessions in the past but I found the it no better the teaching was poor ad I just have not got the time or the money to have any more lessions at the moment. :(

If you already know about timing and basic things of that nature then I would get a few TAB books printed by some bands that you like (or preferablly are a hardcore fan of.) After you learn the riffs and parts of a song from a book try to play along with the bands CD. Don't get your TABS off the internet though. They are crap if your learning how to play. There only good as a resource after you know how to.

After you learn how to play like 100 songs learn a box pattern for the major and minor scales.

Once confident with the major and minor scale you probabily want to learn some theory. A really good book is called "Chords and Harmony for the practical musician." It explains alot of theory in a way that is easy to understand. The point is you need to learn some theory if you want to really kickass.

If your completely clueless...

For now I wouldn't play any 7 chords if I were you. While they are great chords they are just going to complicate things.

Learn the open position chords first. The Learn the major barre chord and the minor barre chord. Don't worry about scales and anything other then the chords. Other then open position chords (i think theres only 7 of them) all the major chords will look the same, and all the minor chords will look the same. So it will start to get easier.

Once you learn how to play the open postion chords and the two barre chords play 4 different chords in a repeating sequence. Strum each chord 16 times before moving to the next one. Be sure to strum evenly (tapping your foot can help with this.) After you start to get pretty good at stuff like this then proceed with what I've written above...
Bass guitar is the answer to everything

maybe just start by learning some chord progressions say just 4 bars with 4 downward strums on each bar with 4 different basic chords you know.Get to know them by doing them slowly and slowly speeding up.When you feel comfortable with them do 3 chords and introduce one more in the mix.I've found that by just doing this you eventually master each new chord with some already known. As for music jargon just google it everytime you need to have something explained, you dont need to know too many musical terms to start to get with it--good luck
