If you already know about timing and basic things of that nature then I would get a few TAB books printed by some bands that you like (or preferablly are a hardcore fan of.) After you learn the riffs and parts of a song from a book try to play along with the bands CD. Don't get your TABS off the internet though. They are crap if your learning how to play. There only good as a resource after you know how to.
After you learn how to play like 100 songs learn a box pattern for the major and minor scales.
Once confident with the major and minor scale you probabily want to learn some theory. A really good book is called "Chords and Harmony for the practical musician." It explains alot of theory in a way that is easy to understand. The point is you need to learn some theory if you want to really kickass.
If your completely clueless...
For now I wouldn't play any 7 chords if I were you. While they are great chords they are just going to complicate things.
Learn the open position chords first. The Learn the major barre chord and the minor barre chord.
Don't worry about scales and anything other then the chords. Other then open position chords (i think theres only 7 of them) all the major chords will look the same, and all the minor chords will look the same. So it will start to get easier.
Once you learn how to play the open postion chords and the two barre chords play 4 different chords in a repeating sequence. Strum each chord 16 times before moving to the next one. Be sure to strum evenly (tapping your foot can help with this.) After you start to get pretty good at stuff like this then proceed with what I've written above...
