I guess I'll contribute to this mayhem. I don't necessarily think that it takes solos trucking it with 16th notes at 300bpm and up to be talented or even good. It just takes a lot of emotion which seems to be more so understood than anything else. Unfortunately to one person what has all the emotion in the world is complete garbage to someone else, so I've deduced that some are impaired and unable to feel the emotion from everything. And I'm guilty of that as well, I can't stand country. Doesn't mean that there's no talent, just that I lack the ability to feel the emotion in it. It doesn't speak to me the way I like to be spoken to and therefore the conversation just goes nowhere... nowhere good anyway. It's just a big disagreement and I find it best not to try and conversate with it and listen to something I enjoy and understand better. But this is all just my outlook on things. Rip it to pieces if you like.

I'm aware that listening to a certain genre is not what makes one an elitist. Being an elitist in almost every respect, I'm pretty aware of the definition.

I seriously decided to try their "solo" from american idiot... it took me like 2 minutes to learn it... if that! their songs are so easy to play. maybe taking at least a little talent to write them... but not much... the lyrics are ok (aside from the fact that I completely disagree with everything they say) and the drummer is good... but the guitarist just down-right sucks.. I could play every greenday song that I've ever heard after about a month of playing guitar.

now! I don't discriminate the entire genre of music, you have to keep in mind that I LISTEN TO IT! so, I obviously don't hate it, (except for greenday, I just can't stand them) and I didn't say that it has to have a blazing to solo in order for it to require talent, as long as it actually has some kind of beat or pattern that takes at least some kind of talent to write, even if the entire beat is just power chords, as long as it's in a pattern, not just playing 8th note power chords through the whole song. frankly I like alot of alt. rock, but there are a few execeptions where it's like "how come I'm not the one being paid millions of dollars to play 3 chords over and over again?"

Green Day might not be the most complex band, by any stretch of the imagination, but they are good musicians. Don't confuse that with skill. They take their skill, and apply it to the best of their ability, and they enjoy what they do. This comes accross to the fan base, and that is what gets people into their music.

This is a VERY subjective topic. It's like taking two people who like ham sandwichs. One of whom like his with ham, mayo, and mustard on white bread. While the other likes his with ham, lettuce, tomato, bacon, pesto mayo, and dijon mustard on a toasted bagget(sp?). Just because the later is more complicated and complex doesn't mean it's any better. It just means one person likes it more than the other. In the end they're both just ham sandwiches.

Dude to be honest I have never heard of Nickleback till I heard that song and thought it sounded cool, I listened to nothin but country my entire life until the past couple years ago I have been getting into the rock stuff. But having a great taste in music (like what PRS said), is so subjective its impossible for everyone to agree in everything. I listen to all kinds of stuff now because I have a friend who turned me toward other music than country. Its all like......ham sandwiches I guess you could say :D

Such an elitist. :) (BTW, I don't eat much myself either, except bacon sometimes...I'm just playing devil's advocate)

Hmm, so I guess cows and chickens live up to your hygienic standards? For me the ole' saying "ignorance is bliss" applies...I don't care what it's from that much, as long as it tastes good, I'll eat it. Nobody wants to know how cheese, hot dogs and sausage, hamburgers, and alot of other things that go through pretty disgusting processes, are made into delicious food. Nor do I wanna stick my mouth on a cow's nipple, but hey, stick it in a jug and I'm good!

im sorry dude, dont mean to be ragging on the 16 year old christian kid from missouri or whatever, but you sound so small-minded. i dont claim to be any kind of musical know-how, but youre a moron. plain and simple. you dont have a clue about separation between talent and art. a painter that has the ability to paint mount rushmore with every exact detail might not make his career painting realistic art. picasso started painting by using realism, and then branched off to abstract. and yea, i know what youre thinking right now in your fat little head: "but dude, picasso is a PAINTER! billy joe is a GEEETARIST! DERR!" yea, im pretty ****ing aware of that, fat boy. you know why alot of his stuff is simple and any dip-**** with a years experience can "learn his solos in less than two mintues"? its because theyre a goddamn 3 man band. you act as if they just came out of nowhere and mtv handed them instruments and said "play a 3 chord progression, well give you 500 million dollars!" dude, greenday has been a band for at LEAST ten ****ing years. heres wehre another one of your sweet comebacks come in... "but quickfingers, if hes been playing geetar since he was 6 (which he has) why isnt he any good??" i bet that he could out rip your "shredding" any day of the week, and i think it takes more balls to have talent and not always show it than to have a little bit and try and play out of your ability (that would probably be you, my fake guitar virtuoso comrade)

so shut your whiny lip about famous musicians and go put a cucumber up your big, lumbering ass and bitch about how gay people are ****ing and getting married and no one but you religious pricks give a damn about it.
