I seriously decided to try their "solo" from american idiot... it took me like 2 minutes to learn it... if that! their songs are so easy to play. maybe taking at least a little talent to write them... but not much... the lyrics are ok (aside from the fact that I completely disagree with everything they say) and the drummer is good... but the guitarist just down-right sucks.. I could play every greenday song that I've ever heard after about a month of playing guitar.
now! I don't discriminate the entire genre of music, you have to keep in mind that I LISTEN TO IT! so, I obviously don't hate it, (except for greenday, I just can't stand them) and I didn't say that it has to have a blazing to solo in order for it to require talent, as long as it actually has some kind of beat or pattern that takes at least some kind of talent to write, even if the entire beat is just power chords, as long as it's in a pattern, not just playing 8th note power chords through the whole song. frankly I like alot of alt. rock, but there are a few execeptions where it's like "how come I'm not the one being paid millions of dollars to play 3 chords over and over again?"
Green Day might not be the most complex band, by any stretch of the imagination, but they are good musicians. Don't confuse that with skill. They take their skill, and apply it to the best of their ability, and they enjoy what they do. This comes accross to the fan base, and that is what gets people into their music.
This is a VERY subjective topic. It's like taking two people who like ham sandwichs. One of whom like his with ham, mayo, and mustard on white bread. While the other likes his with ham, lettuce, tomato, bacon, pesto mayo, and dijon mustard on a toasted bagget(sp?). Just because the later is more complicated and complex doesn't mean it's any better. It just means one person likes it more than the other. In the end they're both just ham sandwiches.
