I'm thinking about getting the MXR Zakk Wylde overdrive pedal to use as a boost for solo's.

What are some other overdrive pedal's that you all can recommend?

I've got the Zakk Wylde overdrive and absolutely love it! It wont give you much of a booste volume wise, but it will help your tone cut through better. You might also want to look into an eq pedal with a level control. Bring the mids out a bit more and set the level a bit higher than your rythm tone an your set.

Being a bit starpped for cash I bought a Marshall Bluesbreaker 2.
This is both a blues overdrive pedal and a boost pedal in one.
For the price it is excellent
Well worth checking out.

Yeah, I've already got the eq pedal I use to boost the volume sometimes...I'm just looking for an overdrive pedal that will give me a little more gain for sustain....

Defanately try out the ZW then. You can sustain for day's with it. If you play with a lot of volume, then you need to watch out for feedback, but it's never been a problem for me, and that's just a byproduct of high gain.

The ZW pedal rocks, but if you already have a distorted signal and want to boost, adding a ZW might not be the best thing, especially if you have a solid state amp. Tube amps love that stuff. I have a Rocktron Austin Gold, that is an overdrive pedal, it gives me a little more distortion, but up to 30 db in boost. Also it has a nice bass control on there so you dont get thin and wimpy sounding. If you wanted just a stand along, the ZW will treat ya right.

I get around the need for an overdrive pedal by wiring my humbucker-equipped guitars for series/parallel pickup coil switching. Set the amp just on the verge of breakup with the pickup coils in parallel for rhythm work. Switch the coils to series connection to step out for your solo. Either setting uses both coils, so they are quiet (humbucking). Parallel connection usually produces a clearer tone that lets your chords cut through nicely. Series connection thickens up the tone as well as increasing the signal level to push your amp into the 'sweet spot'.

I use a Seymour Duncan pickup booster pedal. It's got mediocre reviews but I think it really works as far as a clean boost. It's not a true-bypass pedal but unless you plan on hooking up a lot of pedals it shouldn't be a problem. You can add between 6 and 25db of boost, but the drawback is that you can't add less than 6.

That is what I'm leaning towards. I do play with a lot of volume, but feedback is fun to play around with....

Yeah, I only use tube amps, Marshall JCM 800 and JCM 900. I think the ZW is looking to be my best bet..

Got my ZW overdrive pedal yesterday. This thing ROCKS......Wish I had purchased one earlier. I've never had a more sweet sounding lead tone before this pedal......

Just once. you should know the feeling you get when you reach way up to plug in, and then, when you push the Standby switch, the speakers go "punk", and your shirt flaps in the sudden gust of wind.....

are you refering to playing threw a big rig, or the micro amp blowing the speakers when you turn the amp on? (the micro amp is a booster type pedal, but I'm sure you already knew that, just a little confused by your last post and the previous)

Maybe, if it was on top of the refridgerator??

I meant a full stack with a seriously capable head. The contrast with something called a micro amp appealed to me. That line made better sense on the "one of each" thread. ~shrug~
