I get around the need for an overdrive pedal by wiring my humbucker-equipped guitars for series/parallel pickup coil switching. Set the amp just on the verge of breakup with the pickup coils in parallel for rhythm work. Switch the coils to series connection to step out for your solo. Either setting uses both coils, so they are quiet (humbucking). Parallel connection usually produces a clearer tone that lets your chords cut through nicely. Series connection thickens up the tone as well as increasing the signal level to push your amp into the 'sweet spot'.
