Anyone Sing?
Hey. I've been singin' a bit here and there throughout the year. I'm not too bad in my opinion, but my vocal range is lacking. I can sing to the D just short of the E on the bottom string of a guitar. It's really annoying because my range doesn't seem to be increasing and because of it I can't hit all the notes in songs like Wish You Were Here and Tears In Heaven. Am I stuck with what I got? Can anyone else sympathize?

Well, some of us are born to sing and some (like me) are not.
Regardless, with practice and instruction, anyone can get better.

I recall being in a band where the bass player was the leader. It was his house we practiced in. It was his car & trailer that got our gear to the gigs. And he owned the PA system too. Guess who did the singing? The fact that he couldn't carry a tune if you put it in a basket for him didn't matter. It was his band. We found that if we all played real loud, nobody noticed much. Especially after the second set, when the audience is usually pretty drunk anyway.
So don't get in a big sweat about it. Do what you can with what you've got. Bruce Springsteen has a range of about a note-and-a-half, but there's probably hundreds of people who will swear up and down that he's a wonderful singer. :D

my girlfriend sings, and her parents got her voice lessons for christmas. so, it's been about 8 months of lessons, one half hour lesson per week. and she has found that her range has increased alot. and now she can sing a song from her favorite movie (sleeping beauty) which she could never sing before because it goes pretty darn high. but now she can. so, I guess I'd say get some voice lessons and in a few months your range should increase... or, just get a couple of lessons and ask your instructer how to increase range, then once he/she tells you then you can stop taking lessons and practice it on your own to increase your range.

Not that you shouldn't try and improve, but I've always admired those singers who know their limits and sing accordingly. Like Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) for instance...alot of the time it's just barely above regular talking. And I know most players who sing are pretty self concious. I remember reading both Hendrix and Stevie Ray were wary of singing at all, and were very critical of themselves. Of course it didn't hurt any of these players that they're geniuses on the axe!

sure, but if you could just extend your limits, wouldn't that be better?

Sometimes I pretend like I can sing, but I don't think I'm fooling anybody.

That works well enough in many bands.

How many of us wouldn't be playing the guitar if we could sing like how we wanted to?
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

you know, i was watching this show on vh1- sort of like the movie, School of Rock but not quite. it was gene simmons teaching a bunch of little classically-taught musicians how to play rocknroll. it was pretty funny (a bit corny tho)
but anyways what im trying to say here is when they did lead singer auditions gene picked the worst singer in the class simply cuz he had the most "rocknroll spirit"
same principle applies here. as long as you have fun and rock it, who cares.
but seeing your trying to sing slower, peacefullish songs like wish you were here and tears in heaven, i think you should go for some singing lessons. they do work.

I would, but I would do both at the same time... do you know how many bands would be dying to have me if I could sing and play guitar at the same time? much more then just playing guitar alone

i can hit notes... but my voice just isn't one that i'm fond of... the sound of it doesn't fit most songs and it's just annoying... haha. but like someone else said... it's good to know your boundaries and SRV and Jimi weren't too excited about singing either... in fact, I read somewhere that Jimi was auditioning singers so he could concentrate on the instrumental portions of his music... and same goes for Metallica... Hettfield never intended on being the singer... but it just ended up that way. Just do what you can. If you practice at it though I'm sure you can increase your range...

Shows called Rockschool and it's on VH1 on Friday nights. Gene is teaching a bunch of british kids ROCK N ROLL. All these kids know is classical music. There's about 14 kids in the class and only 4 or so get to be in the band. The group is supposed to open for Motorhead in a week or two. He did pick the kid that couldn't sing but man he's got ATTITUDE!
