Gotta be more specific....

Is the E string popping or breaking at the same place every time?
Check out my band:

yeah man, you could be just plain putting the strings on wrong, idk...my brother had the same problem but finally realized that he was just playing it too heavy.

you gotta be more specific... but, you could be:
A. playing the strings just way too hard
B. over tightening while you tune
C. if you have a tremolo, then you could be trying to put that string on first when you replace your strings... what I do with my guitar that has a tremolo, is, I put on all the strings starting with the heaviest (low E) and working my way to the highest, and then once I have all the strings on, then I tune up, starting with the heaviest again.

so, please, be more specific, does it break while you are playing? does it break while your are tuning, does it break while you are putting a new set of strings on? how often is it breaking? this information would be helpful while trying to diagnose your problem

May be you need heavier gauge strings.

Do you use a tuner to tune it, if so what kind?

Many of my friends use .008's without problem , but when I play their guitars I break the e-string within a few minutes , no matter how fresh it is.
I think that's bec some people's playing is more agressive than others ... Just put on the next higher gauge string, and see how longer it would last (and how sweeter it will sound too ! ;) ) .

Wow... either you bend way too hard... your strings suck... you're tuned an octave high (hopefully you would know if you were)... or your bridge is the most jagged bridge ever. Anyway... what he was asking by "where is it breaking?"... he wanted to know whether it was breaking at the bridge, the nut, somewhere in the middle, or at the tuners. This way you can see where the problem lies. Obviously if the string is breaking when you're bending at the 12th fret it's probably breaking at the bridge. When you tune your guitar check the tension... if you can easily bend the string... it's where it needs to be. But if it's hard to bend the string then you're an octave too high and you need to detune it. Also, if you find your strings still breaking at the bridge get some electircal wire (smaller gauge wire) and strip off a piece of insulation about a 1/4 inch in length. Slide that onto the string and position it to where it acts as a cusion between the contact point of the bridge and the string. This will lessen the amount of pin-point tension. SRV's guitar tech use to do this on his strings.
