ok. Well my name is cassi and im a hotti. If you dont know wht that stands for, dont ask. im 13. and my hobbies are tumbling, cheerleading, violin, and making stuff. But i really want to learn to play!!! I have a gorgeous ibanez (not the best but it was around 700$ so it will have to do for now). It's an electric and its a guitar 6 stringed. I have this passion to pick it up and play my favorite song. Then i remember...i dont know how to play!! At all!!! If you can give me any tips at all i would greatly appreciate it. If there are any sites or online tutors. Or even a helpful book that you think I should read!! Im desperate

We're putting together an absolute beginners page right now so it should be ready in the next week or so.

For now, ya can go here:

http://s93744050.onlinehome.us/GuitarTricksBeginner.html

...and look at the first 20 lessons or so...basically anything that says 'absolute beginner'. You'll need to sign up if you want to listen to the sound files but it's only 5 bucks. Otherwise, you can probably learn a lot just from reading the lessons.

The only thing I know about playing guitar is that the greatest skill you need is patience. Oh, and finger tips like a ninja are also useful. I am more than twice your age and have started to learn to play guitar. I have faithfully practiced every day for the past week since obtaining a rather pretty cherry Epiphone SG and a Marshall practice amp. Nothing special, but it will do nicely. In that week, I have managed to learn to play three chords (sometimes they even sound right!) and I almost had a fit when I actually managed to pick out a recognisable sequence of notes (the riff Chris Rea uses in 'Let's Dance'). I have also learned that you have to put up with the tingling (and sometimes in my experience, burning) sensation in the tips of the fingers on your left hand. I do not expect to be able to regularly fret a note or chord properly until my finger tips toughen up a bit, but I recognise the deep desire to pick up your guitar and play your favourite tunes. I have it too! (Adopts voice of wise mentor, gets mystical far away look in his eyes) Be patient little one.. if you practice, the chords will come...

I have been practicing now for three days, IT COMES TO ME!! I feel like I'm already getting it, then again, I have visited 200 different guitar websites :lol. This site rules, I'm glad I can just ask for help or just brag how good my future-musical talents will be :p. I hope all the beginners (Including myself) understand how to play a guitar. I am 12 years old and have a 20$ whatever this thing is my dad bought. But I'm gonna save up my allowance and get an electric guitar from http//:www.amazon.com, again good luck to you all!

Sincerely, RockZilla

I don't know what that stands for. Is that an acronym for something?

Just keep practicing. Once you develop calluses you'll be able to hold down chords better. Start with open chords, once you get them down, start the barre chords.

wow, a 700$ ibanez...thats not bad. thats pretty good for a begginer. umm, my biggest tip, is take guitar lessons that you can go to like, be next to him/her. Then once you get better, you can learn from tab or chord sites(what i do)

i would recommend getting a lesson teacher, cuz believe me, they know EVERYTHING!! then try to learn from tabs and chords and eventually it will lead to many different styles of music (you can go from punk rocker to neo-classical shredder in a few months, or even weeks!!!) well these were my methods of becoming as accomplished as i am today
ive only been playin over 1 year now and i cant believe how far ive gotten
if you really get good at this instrument, it can be super fun

good luck

peace out :O

i agree with the patience part but if you dont like pain just get round wound strings. they dont hurt as much but they still hurt after u play for about 2 hours straight.

Probably the best thing you can do as a begginer is start with an acoustic guitar. The frets are harder to press, the body is bigger, you have to pick harder and it's all basically tougher than an electric. Once you can make an acoustic guitar sound good, you can skate all over an electric guitar.
The only problem you might have is that you might bend the strings too much on an electric guitar. This is because you would be used to really pinning down the strings, but 5 minutes later of electric and it'll be gone.

Also, you'll be able to laugh at your friends when they struggle with an acoustic guitar and complain about their fingers hurting (Yours would be as tough as leather by now)

Plus, acoustics are very gangster, no arguments.

Remember, practise, practise, laugh at your musically inferior friends, and practise.

If they're old enough to crawl they're old enough to bang.

(not coming from me by the way, my friend always says that, but yeah)

i second what EmanResu said about the acoustic.

When i bought my first guitar i grossly over paid $275 for a Washburn D-11. Practiced on that and beat it up a couple of times when my fingers wouldn't listen to me. 2 years later i got the best Strat Mars Music had to offer and i couldn't be happier.
