I used to smoke, but one day I decided it was time to quit. It was influenced by a friend of mine who also quit at the same time. We'd basically considered everything about smoking we liked and compared it to what we didn't like and... well, the idea of having cancer just didn't seem worth it. That and the smell that lingers on your hands afterwards is kind of crappy too. And it pisses me off because I've never ever had a cigarette because I had a dependancy. I've always smoked because of the flavor and never developed an addiction. So when I quit I never had cravings. The only thing that bugs me anymore is that I really liked smoking. The flavor, the feeling, I enjoyed it. Unfortunately that was the flavor and feeling of cancer brewing in my lungs. So I dropped the habit right then and there and I've not smoked since. But I guarantee that if someone made a cigarette that was much better, less of that added junk, just pure tobacco that had been engineered to avoid cancer and anything else I'd smoke again. But that's just a pipe dream so I'm not getting my hopes up.

Whatever you do, don't eat limes. A friend of mine ate a lime once and BAM!! Two years later. Herpes.

I gave up a 15 year 20+ a day habit 5 years ago. It is hard as hell for the first 6 weeks and then gets progressively easier.

The thing to remember is that the craving goes a way after a while.

Sex can kill you too... or at least give you a very long time with very uncomfortable symptoms.

Try eating a cigarette. That'll take away a lot of your desire for them.

When I worked at the Hammersmith Hospital in London I used to dissect human eyeballs in order isolate to culture cells from the neural retina.

So, what is the worst thing you can have in your eye...well, me !!

Cos: A) it means you are dead and B) that I'm about to eviscerate your eyeball !!

No, it has to be something that makes your body associate the substance with illness. For example, smoke a cig and then drink so much cold water immediately afterwards that you puke.

I'm completely serious, btw.

I quit a 30-year addiction 7 years ago. Just stopped (like so many times before) and haven't smoked since. I see a lot of medical stuff offered to help people quit, but I think the most effective thing would be something that instantly restores a smoker's sense of smell. Smokers have no idea how bad they stink. Like steaming turds wrapped in week-old gym socks! :p

I battled the cigs for a long time. I made this post in December of '03. Sad thing is that I started up again when I went back to college for New Year's Eve. Doh! I've been off em since July of 2004 now though. Almost 1 Year woot!

Any way good luck quitting. BTW, I still have troubles at bars and have slipped up a few times. Just hop back on the wagon ASAP.

I quit about 15 years ago when cause I couldn't get to sleep one night I was coughing so bad. I got outa bed, grabbed my pack of smokes and crushed it into little pieces and never smoked again.
Well, cigarettes anyways.
