Somebody please help me get through this god damn gateway to life! Giving your notes life is my next barricade and I cant find a way over it. They have voices of there own but i cant make them talk. Help me out, when i play scales, they sound like scales not music, not individual lives. I wanna make them sound more then a scale.

Rather than blowing your brains out running up and down scales, have a buddy play some chords and solo over it using the notes in the scale. Don't try to think about the next note in the scale. Just use the scale to tell you which notes work with the chord change. Then, let your er rip.

I'm with fink, having someone play chords while you solo or playing over a recorded song in a key is a great way to accomplish what you're set out to do. Remember also, you must not only play, but listen to your inspirational artists. You'll get a whole lot of ideas you can develop from them. I personally listen and study more than I play.

Another good approach is to play the lead in your head, then find the notes on the fretboard. My favorite leads are those you can whistle or hum to and get stuck in your head, not speed or licks just for the sake of it.

No i mean like if i were to get someone to play chords as a rythm thing it would still sound like a some sort of scale because its boring, kinda like talking in a monotone, the notes come out on only one level, sounding like a scale. I wanna make them talk, sound differnt, accent them. Idk if im getting across what im trying to say but yeah, thats the best i can put it.

If I'm getting the jist of yer point, then I also suggest just trying to add more technique into it. What I mean is playing it like you mean it, with vibrato, pick squeals and such. Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) for instance isn't known for being brilliant in scales, but he's a master of getting numerous squeals out of the same fretted string. Or BB King is known for his vibrato.
