I'm with fink, having someone play chords while you solo or playing over a recorded song in a key is a great way to accomplish what you're set out to do. Remember also, you must not only play, but listen to your inspirational artists. You'll get a whole lot of ideas you can develop from them. I personally listen and study more than I play.
