If I'm getting the jist of yer point, then I also suggest just trying to add more technique into it. What I mean is playing it like you mean it, with vibrato, pick squeals and such. Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) for instance isn't known for being brilliant in scales, but he's a master of getting numerous squeals out of the same fretted string. Or BB King is known for his vibrato.
