Why does all of my music sound like it came from the grunge or post grunge time of popular music? How can I get my music to sound like the new thing, or "whats in?"

What is "In" right now?

To tell you the truth everything coming out now is pretty sterile, save Velvet Revolver. But they are just good ole rock and roll anyways.

the best way would probably be to become more fluent in various styles. Force yourself into a metrical structure for lyrics and build a structure for the music. The key is to expose yourself to as many divergent styles of music as you can so that you have what I like to call a bigger box of crayons to work with.

Ditto on that. Just listen to every style possible, jazz, rock, country, bluegrass, even rap. Copy what you hear, learn it on guitar. Soon you'll start developing your own style. One band I like that's out there is The Mars Volta, their music is just so weird, so different from many bands out there. They're defenitaly my friend band of today's music. But yeah, listen to everything possible.
Practice 8 hours a day and God Bless you.

if you want a recommendation on a brilliant hip-hop lyricist, check out anything by Sage Francis or Aesop Rock's Labor days album. Especially Sage's most recent single Slow Down Gandhi- he proves that hip hop can be intelligent, politically aware, and introspective, not all about bling and guns. Anyway, hope that helps- I can put my money where my mouth is if it was my lyrics that someone wanted to see btw... let me know...

peace

I think that I need to add that I already listen to a lot of styles of music and I also play sax.

I know its hard to judge without hearing it, but I'm using a digitech effects that was made in the early 90s and a $300 4 track to record with. I was wondering if this could be why my songs might sound dated. Or does the recording have nothing to do with it, and its just my music?
