What type of speaker cabinet does everyone here suggest for the Peavey 5150 head (besides the Peavey cabinet). It would need to have good bass response and clarity. Something around $500 used would be reasonable.

You might consider a Carvin Legacy cab either 2X12 or 4X12 ... decent build quality, Celestion speakers, and low price.

I've never played w/ a 2x12 in a band rehearsal. Would it project my sound enough while I play w/ my band?

Have you been using 4X12 cabs? In general, yes, a 2X12 cab is a lot. I use a Line6 AX 2X12 and I can't go higher than "4" without blowing everybody away...even live. You could also go with 2 2X12 cabs ... one open back and one closed (I think the Legacy cabs can even be used both open and closed if I'm not mistaken) for somewhat of a half stack sound though the low end will not be the same. But as far as projection goes I see no problem. You can get a 4X12 cab for that money though (or close to it) if you're worried about that.

Damn! Carvin has awesome prices on their gear. Thanks, I probably would have ended up buying a used Marshall if you wouldn't have posted that web page.

Go with the Marshall (unless you're talking about a Legacy cab, those are good, but still not quite as good for metal as a Marshall). Carvin's "British Series" speakers suck really bad, much like Carvin's C22 pickups do for metal.

Not trying to rip on you or anything, but who said anything about Ibanez, and who are you saying is wrong?

Eventhough none of the original posters of this anchiant thread are around anymore, I'll state my opionion on the matter...

I have a 5150 combo, and use it basically as a head to run a Marshall 1960a 4x12 cab. The stock speakers don't sound bad with the 5150, especially if they're nice and broken in. But, I replaced them with 2 Eminence Governors and 2 Eminence Wizards, placed in an "X" pattern. Once these speakers are broken in, this is one monster of a combo! The governors provide you with all the cutting mids you need to cut through the mix, and the Wizards provide you with the bottom end thump and crisp highs. This cab and speaker combo has been great with every amp I've used with it, and every style I've played through it.

However, if I needed a new cabinet now, I would buy one through Avatar. They have the best prices, speaker combinations, variety, and quality around.

Playa, I'm still stuck...everything is good except the cab...still havent found one that I'm happy with.

I have found a guy (he runs a company called Jimson amps...I checked them out a few years ago, and wasnt too impressed...so I dunno how good his cabs are) who will make me a 2x12 cab with Celestion Vintage 30's, I just dunno if I can trust him...it'll cost me about the same as a Marshall 1936...which would you suggest?

I have tried the Genz Benz, but there is no stock in the country at the moment, and they dunno when they'll be getting again.

The only options seem to be the Marshall, a Line 6, a Vox (nice but too expensive) and the custom made one...or perhaps a Fender, but that is two offset 2x12's(like in the Deville etc) and the head hangs over the sides....
I dunno what to go with.

how bad is that Marshall?
It seems like the best option...but I dont wanna settle for the best option, I want the straight out best.

If those are your only choices, and building your own isn't much of an option, then I would go with the Marshall. It's fairly large for a 2x12, so it should sound "bigger" than the others. It doesn't have V30's though. It comes stock with G12T-75's. Not a bad speaker, but the mids are scooped a bit, and the top end can get a bit fizzy and ice picky. The V30's have a much more focused midrange. If you do get this cab, one thing you might want to look into is swapping out one of the speakers for a V30. A combination of the two would probably sound real nice. I believe Bogner uses this combination in their 4x12 Uber Cab.

Building your own cabinet can be as easy or as hard as you want to make it. Only basic woodworking skills and common sense are necessary. I've attached a plan for a 2x12 cabinet I designed. It was designed to fit under my 5150 combo, so it's a bit oversized. The measurements are in inches. I left off the speaker hole diameter because different speakers require different sizes (usually all similar though).

Never heard of them myself. Do they have a website? I couldn't find any info on them, but I only did a quick search.
