Description
In this lesson we’re going to add some syncopation with our picking hand. One of the essential elements of Travis picking is rhythmic syncopation. We don’t only play the chords or melody notes on the downbeats. Rather, to make it more interesting or spice it up, we play some notes in between the downbeats. These are called the upbeats, the 'ands' in between the counted beats (1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and). This gives a lot more musical options and choices. This can get difficult very quickly because our fingers are used to firing at the same time as our thumb, but in this case our thumb is going to have to stay consistent to the groove and bass pattern while our fingers play something in opposition or in between the bass notes.
