Description

Palm muting is a picking hand technique that's an essential element of rock style guitar playing. In this set of lessons we'll learn all about where, how and when to palm mute with a lot of practical examples to make your rock rhythm playing more interesting and musical.

First we'll look at the physical mechanics of where and how to place your picking hand palm as well as how to pick to get that classic palm muted rock sound. We'll experiment with the placement of our picking hand to see how it affects the tone.

Then, we'll start playing some notes & power chords on the lower strings to get used to the technique. After we learn the basics of the technique, then we'll gradually explore other ways to use palm muting.

We'll try playing riffs and chords with and without palm muting to hear how it achieves different sounds, and to get practice at switching techniques. We’ll also apply palm muting to arpeggiating chords across the higher strings and we'll even play some rock style lead licks.

I'll be using the bridge pickup of my guitar and an overdriven tone because that's how palm muting is most commonly used in rock style playing. But the specific model of guitar you use isn't as important as using the bridge pickup and some overdrive from your amp or an effects unit.
