Now it's time to play through practice tune, and as we talked about in the breakdown the challenge is going to be for you to stay with the singer, because in this case, they won't be listening to you at all. But the good news is that if you can get through it this way, you'll be in great shape, once you play with an actual singer where the listening goes both ways. Make sure you first listen through my demonstration without playing along and then give it a go by yourself afterwards.
I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial and that I've succeeded in showing you the power of this all-important skill. Once again we're working with relatively simple tools, but the concepts we're exploring are incredibly advanced and as I always say- mastering these kinds of skills will do more for your playing than any new lick, trick or chord voicing. These are the things that make you sound like a pro- even when what you're playing is very simple.
Finally I'd like to mention that it can be a great idea to record yourself when you're working on your inner metronome. Often we can hear the issues better once we're not playing, and if you want to be even more strict about it you can try to get a metronome to match your tempo and that you'll show you very objectively where and when you tend to speed up or slow down.
