Description
Now it's time to play through practice tune with the backing track. Remember to focus on locking in tight with the rhythm of the other instruments. Not just their level of swing, but also the overall tempo and groove. Rhythm is everything, so the sooner you learn to lock in tight with the rest of the band the better of you'll be.
I hope you feel like you've gotten a good handle on the swing feel from this tutorial. Focusing on rhythmic elements like we've done it today is one of the most overlooked things for guitar players. We're of course a lead instrument at times, when we take a solo, and a harmonic instrument when we play chords, but at all times we're a rhythmic instrument, so we need to make sure we work on our rhythmic feel and skills just as much as anything else we practice along the way. This will make all the difference for how you sound on your own, but it will also make a difference for whether or not other people are gonna want to play with you. If you play with a solid rhythmic feel and you pay attention to the rhythm of the other instruments, you'll be better off than most guitar players- probably even better than players who know many more chords and licks than you do. If there ever was a secret to being a great guitar player this is it!
