Before we start digging into all the playing, let's briefly talk about the gear and tones I'll be using for these examples. For this one I'll be using a classical guitar for the both the rhythm and the lead parts. Although it's very common that the singer plays the rhythm parts and there's a separate guitar player handling the leads, it also happens that one guitar player flows seamlessly between rhythm and lead. That's what we'll explore today.
This guitar has nylon strings instead of steel strings, and although you do hear it in country music from time to time, it's much less common than the steel string acoustic. If you don't have a nylon string guitar, you can always use your regular steel string or even your electric with a clean tone. I have no pickup in this guitar, so all you're hearing is the sound getting picked up by the mic that I'm also talking through.
