Description

One of the main elements in the heavy metal sound is to get a ton of gain out of your setup. That gain can come from hi-gain amps like Marshalls or Mesa Boogies - or from all kinds of pedals. But a very important factor is to have a guitar that handle all that gain.

Many guitars will drown your notes in noise and simply not sound "tough" enough. A Les Paul is always a great candidate, but you can almost always use any guitar with humbuckers. You could also use single coils, but then you may have to lower the gain a bit, so it doesn't all become a bunch of noise and hum.

But please remember that every piece of gear and every player is different, so trust your ears on what sounds and feels good. You may just end up defining the new heavy metal tone!
