Description

Now that you're familiar with the basics of rock guitar tone, it's time to start exploring the different kinds of icing on the cake - meaning all the different effects that are used in rock. There are a million different ways to categorize and group the different types of effects, but in these tutorials I'll do it in a way that is less scientific, but much easier to understand and use.

In this tutorial we'll look at the category that I call "dynamic effects". The basic function of these effects all has to do with volume, but as you will see from the examples they add so much more than that. This category includes the compressor, the tremolo, and the volume pedal. There's many more but those three are a good place to start, so that's what we'll do today. Let's get to it!
