A Riff Versus a Lick

We've already used the terms licks and riffs quite a bit throughout this course, but since people often confuse those two terms, let's explore the difference in this lesson. In short, the riff is an instrumental section of the song that typically stays the same throughout, whereas the lick is something you play around with - typically for a solo or as a fill. Lets check out the difference in an example!

I'm really digging this one. I really love the rhythm of the Riff. The Lick is giving me some trouble. especially the two strings on the 5th fret. Playing with up strokes is tricky and I'm getting lots of buzzing from the frets. Any tips on how to get my index finger to hold those two strings down to prevent buzzing?

Hello - thanks for the question! Experiment with the position of your thumb behind the neck. See if it makes a difference when barring down on the top 2 strings at the 5th fret. Some players have their thumb curled over top the fretboard for leverage, while others find it easier to have the thumb positioned around the middle of the back of the neck. Also, work on getting your index finger to barre those 2 strings at the 5th fret cleanly without adding the bend yet. Practice this by putting your finger on the fret, strumming it until you're getting clean notes, then remove the finger - and repeat. The repetition will program the muscles so that you can get those notes cleanly. When comfortable, start adding the bend on the G string. Hope this helps!
