Description

First we'll get into the open G-tuning. As always, even if you have a great chromatic tuner handy, whether it's an app, a pedal or a headstock tuner, it's helpful to know how to get into the tuning using open strings and fretted notes for reference. That way you avoid potential confusion, and then you can use the tuner to fine tune it all at the end.

The first step is to get into drop D. Hopefully you remember that we used the 12th fret harmonic of the low E-string and matched that to the open D-string.

Then the A-string goes down a whole step as well, to G. So we'll use the 12th fret harmonic and match that to the open G-string.

Now the D, G and B-string all stay the same, which is very convenient, and as always we'll come back to that in a little bit.

Finally our high E-string has to go down by a whole step to D, so we'll use the 12th fret harmonic of the open D-string for reference.

Now you can use your chromatic tuner to fine-tune the open G-tuning. It's supposed to be D G D G B D.

Now that we're in the open G-tuning, let's start out as always by looking at anything that remains unchanged, so that what we already know can translate into this new tuning without any extra work being involved.

The main thing here is that our D, G and B-string remain unchanged, so everything you know from standard tuning still applies on those strings.

Another thing to keep in mind, if it's helpful, is that aside from the A-string (which is now tuned down to G) all the strings are the same as in double drop D.
