Description

Here is another exotic scale to use in creating riffs, licks, and solos. Phrygian natural 3 is the same as the Phrygian mode except that the third note of the scale is made natural, not flat. This means that the scale has the interval of a major third from the first to third scale degree. You will want to play this scale over major chords to give the chord a darker, "metal" sound.

Here's a note by note comparison of the scales we've discussed thus far:

Pentatonic : 1 b3 4 5 b7

Phrygian : 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7

Phrygian nat. 3 : 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 b7

This scale/mode is also sometimes called Spanish Phrygian, Phrygian Dominant, and the third mode of the Harmonic Minor scale.
