I'm still sayin' that Jimi Hendrix is the best... but I think we can give the "best" title to Jimmy Page and Slash, too...
Just playin' for 5 months... But I feel myself like playing for 10 years :D

The best guitar players in the world shouldn't be based on speed.

They sould be based on a Criteria of :impact, influence, creativity, versatility,
originality, technical skill and lasting popularity.

Here are My top 10 Rock guitarists of all time.

1. Jimi Hendrix - Jimi Hendrix Experience
2. Eric Clapton - Yardbirds, Cream, Derek & The Dominos, Solo
3. Jimmy Page - Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, The Firm
4. Jeff Beck - Yardbirds, Jeff Beck Group, Solo
5. Eddie Van Halen - Van Halen
6. Stevie Ray Vaughan* - Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble
7. Joe Satriani - Solo
8. Ritchie Blackmore - Deep Purple, Rainbow, Blackmores Night
9. Steve Vai - David Lee Roth, Whitesnake, Solo
10. David Gilmour - Pink Floyd, Solo

One guitarist who i think is overlooked at times. Most likely not the greatest ever, but......Stone Gossard from Pearl Jam. His solos are just spectacular.

Ummm... the only problem with that is that Stone Gossard is the rhythm player. Mike McCready is the lead guitarist. However, Gossard's rhythm is pretty awesome and underrated. His use of open tunings and such are pretty cool.
... and that's all I have to say about that.

oops.....my bad on that one. I never really got their names down, and just kinda was hoping that I got it right, but I guess not. Although your right, he is an underrated rhythm player. Especially playing with Mike, he goes almost unnoticed, which kinda stinks for him.

ehh i dunno bout you guys but i dont use speed and technique as a way of finding out how good a guitarist is. personally, i think david gilmour takes the cake for me. i just love every single solo and riff i hear come from his guitar.

comfortably numb
another brick in the wall
money
time
have a cigar
wish you were here
shine on you crazy diamond

thats just to name a few...so hes my favorite. but other than him, i like angus young, slash, vai, SRV too...not a fan of satriani though

David Gilmour IS an amazing guitar player. You are absolutely right about speed too. He plays his solos pretty slow, but they are just as effective as any other solo. The solos he plays for comfortably numb, and time are slow, but are personally some of my favorites regardless of speed.
