If your talking shred then Greg Howe's the man. He just seems to skip over the strings. Unlike Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Impelliteri etc he never went down that cheesy neo-classical route. Satch, though, probably is the best when it comes to having both chops AND tunes. I cant think of any rock player who's written so many cracking instrumental tunes that you can actually remember because the hooks are so catchy.

Country, folk and bluegrass players are almost always hugely impressive. If you want to hear some brilliant flatpicking I recommend Tony Rice, Beppe Gambetta, Dan Crary, David Grier and Steve Kaufman. For country style there's Albert Lee, Jerry Donahoe and a whole bunch of Nashville session players that you can hear on 'Nashville Guitars'. Some of the best acoustic fingerpickers I'd say are Leo Kottke, Peter Lang, Tommy Emmanuel, Adrian Legg and a newish guy on the block Peter Huttlinger.

If you had to pin me down on my all-time favourite I'd probably say Danny Gatton. He could play jazz, country, rockabilly, rock, you name it, equally brilliantly. If you love guitar you MUST check his stuff out. :D

Everybody's proud of their work, granted. Being arrogant because of your work is a weakness (and you should hide it) IMO.

You'd have to know the guy before you can judge him on capitalizing ME. Probably just his personality, some people are odd.

Actually I don´t really know if I´m in the top 3 at my school, because I don´t even know all who play the guitar, such as most of them don´t know that I play, but the guitarists who play at school concerts and such events are actually worse.

Anyway, what I wanted to say is, that if I would have been asked the same question about my talents, I probably hadn´t mentioned guitar as my talent too, because I don´t really know if I am talented, although many people say that I develop quite fast. To get a good technique I´m convinced that you don´t need talent, for beeing a good musician, I´m not sure. You can learn being musicial, and so did I (and will still have to do!). That´s why I don´t know if I have talent.

I'm putting my vote in for little stevie vai. I was piss drunk last weekend and put in his astoria dvd around 3am. Watched the whole thing, and my jaw dropped as though it was the first time I saw him. He may not be as fast as the other guys mentioned, but that doesn't really matter to me. I'm really in touch with his music, and feel like I connect with it in a way that I don't with other guitarist's work.
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

if there realy was something like the "best" guitarist (i´d like to see a reasonable list of requirements) it is most likely one unknown fella in a little town somewhere.

I laughed pretty hard when I read that, but looking at it now it'd make for a decent lyric.

What you've got to do is get drunk, but not too drunk, and then call her on the telephone. Tell her you were too shy to let her know sober. That legal in algeria?

Dood at worst just get your pal to ask her pal if she likes you! If she has a problem with shyness then your incompatible anyway!

As for guitarists... Slash! The guy doesnt take himself too seriously. He represents a guy who jus loves music for what it is, and he happens to kick ass at playing it too. Nothing fancy, just simple catchy riff rock with thee most iconic solos! You guys talk about jimi and how you can hum his solos, check out the november rain solos that slash done on the guns n roses tune. They are mind blowingly perfect for that song, no guitar solo has even moved me that much. The guitar work on that is a masterpiece!

Jimmy Page, Jimmy Hendrix, Stevie Ray, and Metallica's guitarist (sorry forgot his name). Of course this is just a small handful of the greatest guitarists. Maybe someday "your name" will be in the top list! Who knows, time will tell.

Originality, creativity, technicality, and showmanship/live performance.

Originality is a tough one, because everybody's got an influences (the more well-rounded you are the more original I guess). Creativity, I meant per song. Lots of artisits are technical, per se, but every song entails the same format, style, and solo chops. Technicality and showmanship speak for themselves. But...

Is classical really more technical than blues? It's more precise. Is one who spends just as much time practicing the blues as one practicing classical less technical? I've never heard a better blues player than Hendrix, who spent his entire life learning it .. are you going to tell me that somebody who spent his/her entire life learning classical is more technical? Is classical harder to play than blues? Many would say yes, but lets see one of you solo improvise a blues solo at the same level as Hendrix. (Listen or watch Hendrix's last concert, Isle of Wright, playing red house, and tell me if you could pull off an improvised solo at that level. "yeah but it's basic pentatonic stuff.." Don't even get me started on that **** - for reasons posted above.) They're both 'hard' it's just that the two concentrate on different things: precision and accuracy, and chops (solo repitoire) and creativity.

They're two different styles, but mastering one is as hard as mastering the other. Same with jazz, country, folk etc.

So, in the technicality category, he/she who is the most progressed player in any one category is the most technical of them all. It's all for nought if their work isn't original or creative, or they can't reproduce it live.

Since it'd be impossible to have somebody knowledgable in all styles enough to judge one technical player against another, what it comes down to is the simple calculation of the amount of time each one has spent perfecting his/her art. One player is more technical than another if he or she has spent more time perfecting the art. Hours logged.

"But a fighter pilot with 10000 hours logged just got shot down by one with 2000 hours logged." Natural talent?

You sure as hell can't go by records sold or airplay. You can't go by style or how technical one is unless you count the amount of hours each one has, and even that is an unreasonable way to go about it.

Conclusion: Personal opinion... OH WAIT, you could judge by how many people ones playing has affected, the most influencial in both musicians and audience. and THAT may or may not even have anything to do with technicality. How would you judge that though, survey? And this thread is a survey right here and the winner is so far...
