Originality is a tough one, because everybody's got an influences (the more well-rounded you are the more original I guess). Creativity, I meant per song. Lots of artisits are technical, per se, but every song entails the same format, style, and solo chops. Technicality and showmanship speak for themselves. But...

Is classical really more technical than blues? It's more precise. Is one who spends just as much time practicing the blues as one practicing classical less technical? I've never heard a better blues player than Hendrix, who spent his entire life learning it .. are you going to tell me that somebody who spent his/her entire life learning classical is more technical? Is classical harder to play than blues? Many would say yes, but lets see one of you solo improvise a blues solo at the same level as Hendrix. (Listen or watch Hendrix's last concert, Isle of Wright, playing red house, and tell me if you could pull off an improvised solo at that level. "yeah but it's basic pentatonic stuff.." Don't even get me started on that **** - for reasons posted above.) They're both 'hard' it's just that the two concentrate on different things: precision and accuracy, and chops (solo repitoire) and creativity.

They're two different styles, but mastering one is as hard as mastering the other. Same with jazz, country, folk etc.

So, in the technicality category, he/she who is the most progressed player in any one category is the most technical of them all. It's all for nought if their work isn't original or creative, or they can't reproduce it live.

Since it'd be impossible to have somebody knowledgable in all styles enough to judge one technical player against another, what it comes down to is the simple calculation of the amount of time each one has spent perfecting his/her art. One player is more technical than another if he or she has spent more time perfecting the art. Hours logged.

"But a fighter pilot with 10000 hours logged just got shot down by one with 2000 hours logged." Natural talent?

You sure as hell can't go by records sold or airplay. You can't go by style or how technical one is unless you count the amount of hours each one has, and even that is an unreasonable way to go about it.

Conclusion: Personal opinion... OH WAIT, you could judge by how many people ones playing has affected, the most influencial in both musicians and audience. and THAT may or may not even have anything to do with technicality. How would you judge that though, survey? And this thread is a survey right here and the winner is so far...

WOAH!!!!!!! good one

As talented as Hendrix was...he was a sloppy player, well atleast the concert vid i saw...
Hmmm..Basics there are some classical pianist that play more than just classical. There are some that play Jazz and Blues better than hendrix could have ever played at his peak but they in that group of the unknown and are probably prodigies...Could some random blues player (guitarist) pull off chopins fantasie impromtu or one of those really really hard classical songs that Azreal has mentioned before??? probably not but their is a great possibility that one could..not saying its not possible
and i would say that classical pianist pratice on all four tihngs you mentioned...same goes for the blues player

YOU WANT TO KNOW, WHO IS THE BEST VIRTUOSO IN THE WHOLE DAMNED WORLD?!! here is the adress of this man: WWW.KVITELASHVILI.COM his name is Temur Kvitelashvili, he is from the republic of Georgia...
DOWNLOAD his demo compositions "SAKO&SIKO","AVE MARIA", "21 GUITARS", " BESSA ME MUCHO", "CSARDAS","THE LAND OF FLOWERS", "WE WERE TOGETHER"(MY FAVOURITE) and " MEDLEY" (there are some others too) and you will know, who is the best!!!

ON HIS CONCERTO IN TBILISI HE PLAYED ALL 21 GUITAR PARTS HIMSELF...

HE'S GOT BETTER TECHNIQUE THAN JOE SATRIANI, STEVE VAI, MALMSTEEN, ALDIMEOLA, PACO DE LUCIA and any guitarist i have ever listened to.

YOU MUST SEE THIS PHENOMENON !

WELL, These compositions is a little part(very little) of his real abilities, that is not all his technique, you should see him playng on the stage... :)
and he is alsough a GUINNESs books recordsman.
He has played for 30 hours without rest and is planning in the future to play for 50 Hours. You just should see his left hand while playeng(BEST HAND IN THE WORLD), it moves like a spider, he is self-taught, he's shining while playeng, he is a real musician(not only because of technique).
He's Been training for 16 hours a day. HIS FINGERS ARE MOVIENG AS THEY ARE PLAYENG EVEN WHEN HE'S ASLEEP !!!!!( that's a fact, his friends noticed that).
He's become a best fusion Guitarist and was awarded By George Benson and Allan Holdsworth himself(just read his biography).
And if he is not the Best Guitarist, then who is ? :D

HAHAHAhaha!

I wonder if any kid has actually used the flagpole by throwing the other kid into it or chocking him/her with the flags dangling rope...

That is way too much of a comlicated question. I didnt read all of the replies so forgive me if this is repeated. Every person will tell you a different guitarist. The closest you can come to who's the best is in their time. Youll always have a debate. however, here are some of my favorite guitarists.
Slash
Pete Townsend
Joe Perry
Jimi Hendrix
Dimebag Darrel
Zakk Wylde
Jimmy Page
Angus Young
Jack Black- just cuz he makes evrything funny
I cant go on, my brain hurts now.

I watched Shawn Lane's video and i think he is faster than Yngwie Malmsteen :D .
It doesn't mean, that he is the Best guitarist, but he is realy good(very good).I've added one musician in my favourites list :)
here is my list(and that's my opinion only) of Guitarists, who got best technique:

Yngwie Malmsteen, Shawn lane, Temur kvitelashvili, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Al dimeola, Paco de Lucia, John Mclaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, pat metheny, Eric Johnson,Michael Angelo, John Petrucci.
They all are different and all very good... There is no such thing, as only one and the best, there are many and very good... Paganini was the Best, but he played on a violine :)
but super techique is only 50% . if you want to be a good guitarist, you should have alsough a good taste, fantasy and you must be wise. Without that your technique is dead , it's useless.
