Hiya all!
I have been using this site for about a month, but havn't really involved myself in it, I like all the greats, page, van halen, hendrix, clapton, frehely and stanley, may, groham bell and moore and so on, I have been playing for about a year and a half. I got an epiphone SG for crimbo, and since then have really started to play a lot more seriously, what would you guys say was the average time for a guitarist to become stage worthy? I've heard about three years. I know all you guys are probably busy as beavers submitting and so on, but I really would like to know and hear some tales about how, when and why you people got started on that instrument of the gods, I havn't had any lessons and theory blows my mind! You guys really rock, cheers dudes.

I was playing on stage before I even knew how to play guitar. The first band I joined didn't have a bass player so I tuned my guitar down really low and played single notes on it. Next band I played with needed a bass player for a show they were doing & I didn't even own a bass, so I rented one... didn't know any of the songs so I just watched the guitar player and faked it.
I guess the point is to start trying out for bands as soon as you can. Even if you don't get the gig you learn what's needed and you get over your shyness at playing in front of other people. And best of all, even if you do get the gig and you suck, you still get the groupies cause most of them are tone deaf.

When your ready to play on stage will be when you get enough
material to cover your time on stage. [plus some] And of course
be able to play it correctly. [or at least close] The hardest part
for me was getting up in front of complete strangers, instead of
the usuall friends etc. I was scared to death the first few gigs,
then it got better the more gigs we played. Stage fright had a death grip on my a*s but I overcame it. I dont play out anymore, it's been years, and if I went back out it would'nt be as bad as the
first time but would still need to adjust.
Read the post on why did you learn guitar, I posted on that.
Good Luck, Mark

Depends on the person. Some people a year, some people several. Three is a good average.

I really would like to know and hear some tales about how, when and why you people got started on that instrument of the gods

There's a thread right by this one about that. Lots of classical influence on this forum.

I wouldn't mind the fame, but that's hardly what I'm into music for. I want to go places and so forth with my music, but I don't want to do it just to be known by everyone, I don't care much for the idea of fans goin crazy left and right. I more so prefer to say I want my music to be famous and I be the one portraying it.

I think the better question would be - who has a chance of being famous?

I'm more into the music though..... but fame doesn't hurt
There are only two important things in life - There's music and theres girls, not necessarily in that order....

i definitely want to be famous. one day when i´m like 80 years i´d love to look back at a life full of making music infront of peeps who admire me for my playing (and my guitar *LOL*) and maybe some day beeing mentioned in one breath with the great ones of our genre like satch, vai, petrucci, beck -you name them.. who knows - maybe one day i will succeed - i´m ot complaining tho - the internet has definitely helped me and i´m sort of "famous" or "known"already.
however - i´m working hard on it. and i guess i can make it.. i just hope this world will last long enough *LOL*

Lukhater said that you have to play 10 years to call you a guitarist...I think he is right...
However I think it's important to play on stage even if you're a beginner...The most interesting for me is to play guitar competition, because you can really make big progress by watching other guitarists...Moreover you have to excel when you play in competition.
An other thing which is not bad to get some money is to play in café and in restaurants...

I gotta say that fame is probably what pushes the majority of us, myself included. Root of humanity - attention. To be eternally recognized by a race is to be God like and that's what I'm striving for. Secondly, I'm striving for enough cash so that when I get bored/sick of guitar I'll have enough money to drink myself to death.

I'm going to practice hardcore til I'm 28, another 4 years, and if I haven't made it then to any degree then it's over. Music that is. lol.

I would love to be famous but it's not likely and I know I would severely abuse the inherent power that comes with fame.

I'd like to be famous on the condition that it was my music that made me famous, not that I "sold out" to an image hungry audience. It's funny that to us, satch, vai, yngwie, etc are famous, but when I mention them to people they have no idea who the hell they are. I guess I can't blame them, I didn't either before I started playing. I'd be content to just be in a bar band for while and see if that led anywhere.
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

My teacher played 10 hours a day for many years, and HE didn´t even know who Vai is, when I showed asked a question about Eugene´s Trick Bag, and probably he doesn´t know yngwie and satch either.

I know to an extent what it's like to be famous. Back in highschool, I was the 'guitar guy'. That was my social standing in that subculture, known to everybody and I was in every single band in the entire town, no kidding. I went through all the stages when somebody loses their popularity or gets put out of the scene when I went to university. Did me good though, so I'm sure I'll be able to handle it with ease next time I go through it.

Finance your life by having a band, playing gigs and touring around, would be the best thing I could imagine.
