cut some skin
I heard many guitarist cut some skins(middle of the fingers ,the web like skin) to have more strechtable fingers.( i heard wes borland was one of them) is it true and applicable?

I've never heard of it but sounds gross. 5th fret to 12th is my reach, barely. I'm never going to use that stretch though and there's no way I'd slice anything to get more. I think breaking a key bone or two and then setting it slightly off would be more benificial maybe.

That's pretty drastic.... i'd rather just play the notes elsewhere on the fretboard so I didn't need to stretch that much, or not play them.
5 - 12 is my max too... wouldn't be able to do that much without damaging my hand tough. Hurts to do it at all...so forget that :)

Uhm, weird.. I thought there were some kind of important tendon or sinew at that place.. I may be wrong, but I don't think that's a good idea. If you want to take sick chords with a large distance between the notes, use your thumb aswell like Randy Rhoads. That looks cool aswell, more impressive than a sliced up hand.

I heard Chris Poland of Megadeth severed a tendon when he was very young, punching a window or something that allowed him an unnaturally long reach on the fretboard. Not sure if thats true or not though.

I would think twice about cutting into your hand like that. Chances are there are some VERY important tendons in there that you need. The whole thing sounds like a urban legend more than anything.

I think they're talking about cutting the webbing between one's fingers. It can be done (by a doctor, don't do it yourself), but it's not really worth it, in my opinion. It would make your fingers look disproportionate to your palm. It's kind of like forking your tongue - weird, but doable.

You don't need to do that. Hell, my finger's are as short as my little sister's (who's only 13), but I can put my thumb to index 180 degrees, which gives me a stretch comfortably of 5 -> 10, but I can hit the 11th if I really try to (not really useful though, because I can't go very fast from 5 -> 11. I don't have any trouble playing due to that, though. How often do you seriously need to stretch further. Just increase the flexibility of your fingers before considering cutting the webbing. I can hit an Fadd9 (1, 3, 5, 3, 2, 1) without trouble now, or an Am9 (x 0, 2, 4, 1, 3), or a C#11 (8, 10, 12, 11, 8, 8). It's just a matter of practice. Good luck.

I just wonder, isn't that skin somekind of inheritance from when we were fishes? Will it affect your swimming-skills? And, another thing! Doesn't those skinpieces works like spring? If you spread your fingers they will automatically come back into standard position, thanx to the skin Poland loosed? So, if you don't have those bits, perhaps they wont return and you will find yourself with spread fingers. Maybe you will look like the scissors-man, but with out scissors..
