Metal Zone?
I played a Metal Zone pedal about 5 years ago in a shop and it was pretty cool but couldn't afford it at the time. Then I tried my friends metal zone pedal a few years after and it sounded lame but at our last show, one of the other bands was using one by itself and it sounded awesome so what do you guys think? Do you rate the Boss Metal Zone pedal? I saw one on ebay for Ā£20.

Also, do multi effects pedals sound good when recorded in the studio. If not, what stuff do you recommend to get the best metally sound (e.g Iced Earth, Megadeth) bearing in mind that we don't have that much money Ā£200-Ā£300 absolute max right now
Is the Digitech RP7 anygood? Found one online going for Ā£40.

Nice studio recordings normally have several elements including: EQ that doesn't clash with other instruments, lots of Air (subtle ambiance from room reverb) and that little bit of magic that normally takes the form of a vintage valve compressor !
Going strait into a desk with an effects pedal negates warmth from the amp, the cabs effect on EQ as well as ambiance (air) Mic limits and nuances from preamps .

I just want to put my two cents in..
I have owned 2x Metal Zones in the matter of 4 or 5 years. It sounds great with combo amps but if you ever try and practice with it or gig it through a head you have to mess with the EQ alot because its hard to cut through the other instruments and be heard.
The pedal alone makes your highs sound like plain white noise and your lows like mud. So you have to adjust accordingly.
One thing I learned through playing with it is that you don't necessarily want to max the distortion and everything else. When I use it, I have:
Lately, however, I have just been using my head's gain/distortion channel with a Tubescreamer TS-9. It took some getting used to coming from the Metal Zone, but it seriously sounds way better and much thicker live and on recordings.
Sorry for making it so long ;)

- volume at 50-60%
- low/bass at 50% (so it doesn't sound too muddy)
- high/treb at 70-75%
- mid at 0-25% (to get that metal sound)
- mid freq at 50%
- distortion at about 60%
