I have been palying for a while but still suck, I wanna get a amp and was thinking about the Yamaha DG 100 so I dont have to buy any effects but it seemed to be discontinued so I am not sure what to get. I only have a tiny Fender amp and no effects except the distortion button that comes with that amp, what is a good model amp??, and I never understood the concept of having a amp head ..what is that? does that mean that the head has the effects but you still need the bottom part to go with it or you can play just using the top part? If that is the way to go what would be a good combination?? I have a Ibanez JS1520...if I get a stack do I still need effects or the Head comes with them..what is a good effect pads, I was looking at Boss gt-6 or GNX3...I can only spent about $600 on the whole deal..I like Steve Vai, Satriani type of guitar playing...Thank you all for all the advices

I think you should keep your little Fender , and get a multi-effect pedal like a GT-6 or GNX-3 , they'll be helpfull since you like satch & vai.

An amp head doesn't necessarily have onboard effects (other than the reverb and dist) , a stack amp is just like a combo amp but the amp and speakers come in separate units (the head can't operate withour a speaker) ... BTW, when you're looking for a good amp , you look for the clean tone and the distortion tone, not the effects ... Most great amps doesn't have any onboard effects.

A 'modelling amp' has built-in effects that attempt to shape the sound in ways that imitate some popular classic amplifiers. Some of the newer ones ae pretty good at it.

A combo amp is an 'all-in-one' unit that has the amplifier and the speaker(s) in the same cabinet.

An amplifier 'head' is a box that has only the amplifier in it. It usually sits on top of a 'stack' of separate speaker cabinets, like the head on top of a snowman.

so can you have a ss combo amp and a tube combo amp ? I have a marshall 30watt mg.... would that be called a combo amp ?
By virtue of their electrical properties, tubes generate a special waveform when they're saturated, which is why tube engineering has tremendous tonal advantages over solid state or DSP solutions, particularly for crunch and lead sounds. Tubes enter the saturation zone gradually or softly, which lends tube-driven tone its trademark yet totally unique character.

I don't know the Marshall product line, but if the amp and the speaker are in one unit, it's a combo.

Yes it's a combo amp , usually stacks starts from 50watts .
Both tube and ss amps are available in stack and combo models , my fender combo is an all tube amp for example ... As for Marshalls , JCM series and older Marshalls are all tube except for the JCM900 , and all available as combo or stacks ... MG , AVT , VS at least has a ss power-amp sections , also available as combo or stack.

BTW, a good modeling amp like a Fender Cyber Twin combo cost as much as a small tube combo and a cool multi-effect unit.

if you're looking for a versatile amp that doesn't cost too much and has built in effects, I would take a look at the Line6 Spyder II series amps. I think they're fairly decent for the price. Marshall also makes amps with built in effects, but I haven't had very good results with them (as far as the effects go).
