Most OverRated Solo's
Okay I'm going to start this one with Stairway to heaven and FreeBird, they are good but not that hard, way to much credit.

define overrated. both of those solos are not technically difficult, but they are groundbreaking. so in the grand scheme i don't see them as overrated.
i think some of Kirk Hammet's solos are overrated especially the later ones. i saw Smells like Teen Spirit in Guitar WOrld's list of the hundred greatest solos, which i think is bull****. adn i think Yngwie's later stuff is overrated, but his early stuff kicks ass

To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

Just because they aren't hard doesn't mean they are overrated. Could you imagine Stairway with any other solo? The don't have to be painfully hard to not be overrated.

A kick-ass solo, don't have to be hard to deserve good feedback.
What about Gilmour's solo in Another Brick in the Wall?
A masterpiece if you ask me, but it's not like he uses 8-finger tapping or sweep-/alternatepicking at some craisy speeds.
A solo is much more 'bout feeling, then it is jerking off on fretbord (you can say schredding yes).
FEELINGS my friends is the most importent thing when we are talking art.

overated solos.......anything by Slash. A barage of randomely scattered notes within a blues scale with no regards to phrasing or melody.

I've never heard anything by slash, I don't think.
I think smells like.. is by far the worst.

"One" provides us with enough evidence that Kirk Hammet is not very good at writing solos.

Youve all mentioned metallica so i wont even bother..
Ive got the "guitar world 100 best solos ever" edition so it should be easy:
Euription - which in my humble opinion is one of the worse solos ever. It sounds like your average guitar player going to some guitar shop and showing off with all the licks he knows.
All along the watchtower, One, Crossroads (by Clapton),
smells like teen spirit. Those are the ones i can recall now, because they were all rated in the top 50 in this magazine.

Agree with that 100%. I was going to write that basically before I even read it. I hate it sooo soo much. It has absolutely no feeling, and it makes me want to cry when people are awed by it.

Well, I'm not awed by it, but I'm impressed by how many tricks he could throw into one solo. Sure it has no feeling, but it seems like it was written more as some kind of parlor trick than any actual musical endeavor. As a musical composition, it blows my...well, you see where I'm going with this. As a bag of tricks, however, it's pretty cool.

Right, but my point is that "Eruption" isn't music. It's just a backingless solo. He could do whatever he wanted, and he chose to be trickier than Run DMC. Musically...well, I'm not gonna go there since it's not a musical composition.

I agree about "smells like teen spirit" Nirvana sux. I dissagree about kirk hammet I think he's good but anyway maybe overrated. Eruption, or any EVH is detestible. He's awesome technical-wise, but emotion is non-existent. I mean eruption is just all of his tricks on one "song" if you can call it that. I mean anyone could put a few licks together. I heard he was just playing around and came across those licks and they happened to be in the same key so he published it. I mean little wing is so much better in my opinion. So anyway off that. The only reason I said stairway to heaven was overrated is because it's just going up and down the pentatonic scale. Not alot of creativity but it's still good. I just think to much credit. I definetly emotion is more important( to me it is anyway). So, thanx for putting ur opinion.

Just one question.......has any body ever attempted to learn Eruption?..or any EVH solo for that matter?

i seem to constantly run into those "carl logan is god" guitarrists lately. i think that dude is absolutely overrated. on some guitar-mag they wrote (when he joined manowar) "carl logan is one of the best and fastest guitarrists of today". then i heard his wanking and i was like WTF?????? that dude sucks and so du his solos.

It is hard to play im sure, BUT its still bunch of tricks being played together..
Tricks can be hard but they are still tricks.
