This is just me, but when one is posting something I just assume it is there opinion. Like in an essay you don't write "I think" a whole lot, because it sort of ruins the authority of your opinion.

Well some people just aren't humble, and think there opinion is best period. I'm sure he probably didn't mean to sound like an expert though, and why get upset over someone not typing an "IMO."

Okay, not to be a jerk or anything, but everyone thinks their opinion is the best. Why else would it be their opinion?

I'm still going with Van Halen's Eruption.

I'm not gonna go like some people and just say its crap, but I do think its overrated. Mainly (i think so at least) from Greg Howe. I remember reading a few years back that he developed some of his unique techniques from trying to play Eruption, but playing it wrong. Funny I guess, considering Greg Howe completely blows Van Halen out of the water. In his first album with Howe II (a little band with his brother), theres a similiar solo track to Eruption, but of course with Greg playing. Kind of puts Van Halen's playing into perspective when you see where he probably could have taken it (if he'd kept on improving after the 80s). And of course Greg Howe has improved since '89 as well.

Here it is, its a small file:

Eruption overrated.... R U NUTS?
OK, it's only one of the most influencial solos ever. It only contains the worlds first segment of two-hand tapping in a rock context... What is the greater invention of mankind, the wheel or the sportscar???.

Hold on.

First tapping?

You've got to be kidding me, people have been taping since the 70s, PROBABLY much before then. But the only people I know that did it first were in the late 70s.

Hello, did you check when Van Halen's first album came out?
For your information, it's 1978.

VanHalen was inspired to develop his tapping technichue after hearing Billy Gibbons from zztop do it on a recording. Billy did it more as a hammer on/pull-off trick, not as an Arpeggio technique like Eddie developed it in to.

I have that one too. I think that the most overrated solo is "Star Spangled Banner" by Hendrix or "Teen Spirit" or "One".
If I leave here tomorrow,
Will you still remember me?

Chris Mood! - How is slash overrated! So far as most popular solos hes up there top 5 in most peoples opinion, just check out previous threads. And the stuff he does live is awesome too, check out 'Move to the city' or 'double talkin jive'

Imagine tom morello playing his solos on an accoustic! lol, there would be nothing to them without the effects he uses.

Eruption, spanish fly are simply brilliant, and blow people away! Dont see how EVH is overrated, hes relavitely underrated these days I think. Dont think sum of you guys realise just how good a technique you need to pull off that stuff.

Ha ha - soon as I saw this thread I thought hammet. Hes a grat insperation to the ispiring musician in us all, he proves anyone can become a famous guitarist!

Though Van Halen wasn't the first to ever tap in rock guitar, he did bring it into the main stream usage it has today. Technically, we have EVH to thank for Kirk Hammet's solo to "One." Not sure if that's good or bad...

Jolly well said, it's EVHs doing that tapping is now a common technique in rock music. It was done much earlier by classical and jazz guitarists, and some guys may have used it in rock music at the same time, but he made it big. Billy Gibbons used it as a kind of gimmic (he still does at live shows) but EVH really took of with it. And Eruption was, to my knowledge, the first solo in which tapping arpeggios appeared, or at least the first that ever became famous. So to call it underrated is a bit strange I think.

I have a feeling Kirk Hammet got his tapping from Joe Satriani, who tapped quite a lot (with his pick).

Ha ha.......I mainly just posted that to create some contraversy, Slash plays some pretty decent solos, he's definitely a very good rock guitar player, but he's not the god most people make him out to be.

I think his image helps him a lot too, hes without a doubt thee most iconic guitarists ever! image wise! Top hat... fag mouth.. corkscrew hair... les paul... Slash has commendeared that look!
