I don't mind Blink 182, and I'll tell you why. Blink has actually done some decent songs in their career (I know I'm gonna catch some heat for this) such as "Adam's Song." Very poorly written lyrically, Adam's Song does still impress me in one specific way: the intro. The intro isn't complicated or anything, but it starts on the fifth and ends on a root. That's nothing special, but it's something that I see in a lot of rock intros, which means that Blink actually knows SOMETHING, although not much, about music. Unlike Good Charlotte, who tunes the guitar into drop D and frets strings randomly, Blink actually knows what they're doing. That said, I can't stand their music, but I'll give credit where it's due. Musically speaking, Blink's earlier stuff was pretty decent, and WAY better than most pop. However, Blink made the cover of "guitar world?" I'm actually kind of cool with it, magazines never get anything right, look at Rolling Stone's top 100 guitarists.

Beats on Jolly maliciously. ARGH!!! ;) 'LOL' Naw Blink did ok for a pop punk band, especially earlier and I guess there new cd is alittle more experimental (whatever that means). I personally do not like them for a couple of reasons. But guys don't fret, john has been on a guitar magazine cover and has been meantioned in many. Good point on Rolling Stone, then again they had the Clash as the best rock band of all time once. Good band (i like the clash) but not the best.

I agree. Actually, in my opinion, the Who is the best rock band ever. If not, then the "Tommy" album is still the best album ever conceived (all genres included). Of course not everyone will agree, but you do have to admit that "Tommy" is a damn good album. And I like R.E.M. better than the Clash. I know that they're slightly different kinds of music, but I just thought of that randomly. I saw your post and was like "The Clash...hmm...I like REM better." Not sure why I thought of that, but I felt it was worthy of putting into this post anyhow.

Yeah the Who was great, I saw them in concert a few years back. There bass player impressed me alot, yeah Pete did too. :) Usually Zeppelin wins it every year, which I think is something hard to swallow at times. Many great bands that deserve the credit, amonst many great guitarists.

True, Zeppelin was a fantastic band, but I still always thought the Who pulled off a much better job as a whole. Plus I thought the Who was comprised of better musicians (yes, I DO like Pete Townsend better than Jimmy Page). Keith Moon was great too, while he lasted. Hey, speaking of nothing, does anyone know what happened to Mitch Mitchel and Noel Redding after the Jimi Hendrix Experience broke up? They weren't very good (at least not as good as Mr. Hendrix), so I'm guessing they weren't too successful, but I could be wrong.

Hendrix used to be my forte, but I have no idea what happened to those two. Mitch was an excellent drummer in my opinion. To throw an aerosol can in the fire, there's no way you can compare the Who and Zeppelin based on technicality. .. that's not to say I still don't appreciate the Who though.

Blink stinks but it makes sense that they made it on the cover of Guitar World - look at Guitar World's targeted audience. It's all about the money.

Yeah you can't really compare the Who to Zeppelin. Both great bands but Zeppelin stamped a harder mark on the music world. From talking to an older generation, Zeppelin was a mind blowing experience live. Seeing the Who live, I must say they were extremely tight and throughout the concert they each did their own thing which was jaw-dropping. As I've seen and heard Zeppelin live (videos or cd's of course), one thing I don't like is Page is quite sloppy at times. Musically they were gifted, but sloppiness bugs me when they get so much credit. The Who wasn't sloppy, but the one I would give the prize too would be Zeppelin even though. Zeppelin just wrote too many hits, Bonom and Jones were probably among the best on rock rhythm. The Who although were musically exquisite didn't hit rock music as hard as Zeppelin, and didn't write as many classics. A big if your going to give an award as such, the Who would still be in the top 5 though. To me, being in the top 5 is standing next to 1st cause they were so many great bands, Sometimes it's only a matter of opinion on who gets it.

I see what you mean. But writing a lot of hits does not necessarily mean that Zeppelin's a better band. I'm going for quality, not quantity, and while every one of Zeppelin's hits was phenomenal, I defy that band to release an album as good as "Tommy" or "Who's Next." Nice Sig, by the way. "First you wanna kill me, now you wanna kiss me...blow."

Honestly it's a matter of opinion on who's better. You also can't say that Zeppelin didn't release amazing albums. They also made it a point for the whole album to be great from beginning to end, not just a single or couple songs on that album. Although "Tommy" is one of my favorite albums, I don't think it stands up to Zep's untitled '71 release (better know as IV). That is just an amazing album from the first note to the last. Not just the big hits, "stairway" and "black dog" but battle of evermore (have often does a band come off a hard rock tune to go to acoustic and still keep the energy up..that says alot) and as the leeve breaks is just the final blowout. One of the best closers for an album ever!

You wanna know why Blink was on the cover and not Dream Theatre? Because those little pencil dicked morons in Blink are what is hot in the industry today for the teenyboppers and punkrock wannabees. They sell CD's, so obviously any overhormoned teenage punkgirl is gonna pick up any magazine with their faces on the cover and masturbate to it and their latest album. Therefore, sex sells. It all comes down to sex...and the government... They are watching you you know...right now....alongside the RIAA.... They see you downloading all that porn and illegal music.... RUN!!!!
So. If you throw a cat out of a car window, is it considered "kitty litter"?

On a somewhat happy note, guitar PLAYER magazine...

Has an article on Shawn Lane. 5 or 6 pages, maybe it will encourage people to check out the 3 or 4 albums he's had out since the last time he was in that magazine..

the article on shawn lane is only half a page. it will probably be up on the guitarworld site later
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.
