I want to now what kind of amp would give me a good lead sound like Michael angelo's. Im getting in to shredding and I want his sound. One more question, How much wattage do I really need can I get a 50watt and mic it if Im playing with drums or should I get at least a 100 watt?

I like the avt100 but are the effects really worth payig for?

I think Michael Angelo uses Randall solid state amps (I hate his tone anyway).

Don't spent much on vintage stuff unless you know what you're doing ... A 50 watt amp is pretty loud enough to play along with the drums.

JCM's are way expensive than AVT's , go to the store , try models from both series and decide which tone you like better.

Arn't the AVTs the upgrade of the Valvestates. I have a VS60 and I didnt like it. I'd go with a JCM 800 or 900 any day !
My instructors page and www.studiotrax.net for all things recording.

I have run into a similar problem. I have finally raised the cash and can afford an all tube Marshall or similar amp.
I have found a 1959slp 100 watt head and the cab (4x12) that goes with it for the equivalent of about 900USD, I can also buy a used JCM900 head for that price, but without the cab. I know the slp is a single channel, push volume real loud if you want gain kinda amp, but I have one or two really good distortion pedals. When I run them through this amp, will I still keep the warm tube tone, or lose it. If I loose it, then I guess I should go with a Jcm or another two or more channel amp.
I need the distortion to keep up with my band though, we play sortof "post-modern thrash metal" if you will.
Any suggestions of a cool amp, I really want a tube amp, but cool solid states are also cool.

You'll still keep the tube tone ... Most people who use JCM's use a Boss pedal or something combined with the crunch tone from the amp to get high gain.

However , some people would prefere to have an exclusively tube distortion.

Mesa makes great equipment, as long as you never drop it on your foot or anything like that. Those amps are effing bricks.

I was talking to a friend of mine who works at a music store and he said marshalls after the '80's are really just riding on the name. But i would go jcm, i borrow a valvestate for a month from a buddy and i hated it.
WWSD? What would stevie do?

I have a Marshall AVT 50 and it has a great warm sound to be mostly solid state. But I would probably save the money and get a JCM2000 40 watt combo.

For the big 80s hair metal tone you'll prolly want a JCM800 with a ada MP1 preamp infront.
The AVTs are good amps ut are still solid state and can't quite hit the true dynamics aof a true tube amp.
The vintage non-master volume heads are the best sounding Marshalls of all time but have to be cranked to overdrive um.These are among the loudest amps of all time.PS you ill be booted outta the bar befor you ever get the thing up to 10.
The JCMs are about the best happy medium. The 2000s are good the DSL is a good head the Tsl is non or was for problems. The JCM 900s are for the most part not what you want they use a solid state gainstage in the preamp.Allthough the JCM900 SL-Xs are all tube. The JCM800s are my fav though they have the truest overdrive but need to be loud to get um goin as they are not high gain.
