I prefer the melodic voicings of Steve Vai.

Soothes the soul, man.

Sometimes I hit notes only dogs can hear.

I prefer Jazz-solos. Theese musicians are at such high skill level.

And Denmarks best guitarist and one of the worlds greatest (have teached even some of the REALLY big stars at guitar)plays jazz! No kiddin'

Yeah I've noticed a trend since I've gotten into this shred scene. A lot of these guys are jazz musicians playing rock. Punch a jazz solo full of distortion and emphasize the one and three and you've got an untouchable rock guitarist. Same deal with a classical bit with distortion. I guess that's the great thing about rock, versatile. You couldn't take a clean rock solo and put it in a jazz tune without puking.

I've done classical solos in a jazz tune...does that count? True though. I like all solos except obnoxious ones and country ones (country does NOT include southern rock and bluegrass).

I find myself listening to solos on other instruments than guitar, as of late. Like sax solo's in jazz, and violin concertos/quartets on classical music. Anything to provoke new interest. I'm at the point where I'm try to bridge out and expand my horizons alittle more. Even indian and mediterrean (sp) music. Some interesting melodies in other worldy music, which just seems to inspire me.

Personally I love Alex Lifeson's solo style with all the clever melodic phrasing, cold distortion tone and screaming pinch harmonics and whammy dives. I'd rather listen to Lifeson (Rush's lead) than any number of anonymous shredders, the guy exudes class.
If I couldn't laugh at myself how could I laugh at someone less ridiculous?

um... i dont know if this is what you mean but personaly i dont like widdely solos. i like solos (like songs really) to be melodic and memorable. they dont have to have every trick in the book to be great. not that im saying people who do play fast widdely solos are bad, but i just prefere the powerfuls one you know? again i'm gunna pick on the solos from comfortably numb as an example

Anybody who can make it meaningful ya know? Brian May, Randy Rhoads, exotic stuff and jazz stuff. I like the classical shred stuff. Country can be good if the guy knows what hes doing, otherwise its crap. Blues can sound good all the time. Jazz is so diverse and covers so much that I love it. Shred metal is good just cuz you admire them goin up there and playin burning solos, they can be real spontaneous. The only thing I don't like is when I go and see small unsigned bands where the guitarist goes up there and tries to improvise, and he does like all these out of key bends and notes. But otherwise, its all good!!!!

I like any style of solo as long as its played tastefully INTO not over the song.Allot of players make the mistake of masterbating on the guitar, and blowing fancy technique and speed when its not called for.
I personally am a blues rooted southern rock/rock/hard rock style player myself.I really get off on a deep soulfull lead that makes you feel something. But at the same time I sometimes like my Yngwie, and Dio era Vivian Campbell.
I'm not into the whole Satriani,Eric Johnson vibe but I can respect them.
And allthough I'm not a country fan I have to say most proficient country players can hand a rock guitar player there @ss on a platter.

Favorite style solo? Circus music solos of course, with Nintendo being second favorite.
