are there any famous players out there equally adept on both lead and bass? it's just when I've heard certain well-known 6 stringers play bass on their albums, it's often pretty bas(s)ic. then again maybe they're just playing what's required rather than being flash.

playing a good bassline requires a different kind of thinking than playing lead or rythm. mostly guitarplayers who pick up the bass fall into the habbit of playing guitar on the bass or simply playing the root-notes of a certain chord progression. a good bassline is much more - in that case, a good knowledge of theory is usefull.

David Gilmour played the bass in "Hey You" (fretless!). He said something like, "Roger on fretless? Yuck!".

He once said in an interview that he played most of the bass on certain albums (probably Dark Side and on). Roger Waters would win best bass player competitions in magazines and would thank David Gilmour.
... and that's all I have to say about that.

Buckethead actually plays a good bass when he feels like it.

Aparently a lot of Jimi Hendrix' studio recordings were him on bass, not (Noel Redding?).

Jimmy Page wrote the bassline for "Dazed and Confused".

When Jimmy Page first played with the Yardbirds he actually started playing bass with them. Then when he went back to 6 String he combined what he learned from the bass and combined it with the 6 string and then started to really have some fun.

tune low, play hard and
floor it. Floor it.
That's technical talk.

Yeah, Jimi played a lot of the bass tracks on the Electric Ladyland album, including the great bass trck to WatchTower.

Also, in response to the David Gilmour statement; Lee Ritenour was brought into the studio to lay down guitar tracks for The Wall, so the same holds true for David recieving recognition where recognition may not be due.
