You probably want to know about Bulgarian folk music?
Ok, there is really nothing special about chords, I guess. Using major chords and minor chords should be fine.
The thing that makes bulgarian music interesting is the usage of odd time signatures such as 5/8, 7/8, 9/8 etc.
Also, in some regions they sing in such a way that they make transitions in quarter tones. Example: lets say at some point the singer sings A and then she sings somewhere in between A and A#.
There are much to be said on the topic but I am not quite very well prepared to give you some more extended information. Ask me if you have any specific questions, I will try to answer.
By the way, why are you interested, I mean there should be some special reason, I guess, It does not happen everyday someone here to ask about Bulgarian music. Just curious...

It's just because I have a friend here in London doing really cool theatrical/musical gigs showcasing typical Bulgarian music and I was asked to jam with them to see if I could get with them with my acoustic guitar... I pretty much LOVE progressive music like Dream Theater and Planet X so odd time signature is no problems, a reason why I love Bulgarian music I guess, but also the fact that a guy like Steve Vai introduced me to all those exotic sounding songs with his last live album made me want to experiment with that friend of mine's band. So if you'd have just a few examples of typical chord progressions, then I could figure out how to jam around these and go from there... :)

Ok I'm kind of slow in my responses. sorry for that
Looked through some songs and I could find that all kinds of chord progressions can sound like Bulgarian music if they are played over a odd time signature groove.
For example
7/8 B B B / B B B / B B B / A A B /
If you play that you get the traditional dance called "ruchenitza".
And if you play the same progression over 9/8, you will get another traditional dance, which is "daychovo horo"(I guess)
So, you see, to my ears everything you play in those grooves, sounds like Bulgarian music and the problem is quite the opposite for us here -- to make something using these time signatures that does not resemble so painfully these traditional dances.
In short, you should not have nay problems playing it using whatever progressions you like.

like I said, any kind of progressions would help me so thanks heaps!! I've just gone to see those friends of mine yesterday, they did this kind of story-telling mixed with music ala Bulgarian, of course, and I kinda got to "typical" feel for it.... and the vocals.... WOW.... what can you say!! Awesome! Reminds me of Enigma's "Return To Innocence" 's beginning.... totally trance's mind-boggling...... :) anyways.... I think I got it..... will post mp3s as soon as I have for you to hear... if you are in London and wanna come to the next gig, let me know! :)
