Looked through some songs and I could find that all kinds of chord progressions can sound like Bulgarian music if they are played over a odd time signature groove.
For example
7/8 B B B / B B B / B B B / A A B /
If you play that you get the traditional dance called "ruchenitza".
And if you play the same progression over 9/8, you will get another traditional dance, which is "daychovo horo"(I guess)
So, you see, to my ears everything you play in those grooves, sounds like Bulgarian music and the problem is quite the opposite for us here -- to make something using these time signatures that does not resemble so painfully these traditional dances.
In short, you should not have nay problems playing it using whatever progressions you like.
The world is loaded, it's lit to pop, nobody is gonna stop!
