Sure it's fast, loud, and squeely, but, hey, isn't that what electric guitar is all about? Don't get me wrong, I love guitarists like Mike Campbell, Mark Knopfler, and Clapton, but sometimes it's just plain awesome to kick back, relax, and shred. I mean, I can sit and listen to Slash, Van Halen, Rhandy Rhoads and plenty of awesome guitarists tear it up for no apparent reason for hours. Why? Because it rocks. Let's face it, everybody loves to do the Stevie Ray Vaughn thing, but shredding is just as musically valid. It's not noise...IT'S ROCK AND ROLL!!!

There's nothing wrong with it. Some people just can't or don't want to and answered to the post Who Needs to Shred?
Shredding ROCKS!!
If I leave here tomorrow,
Will you still remember me?

nothin is wrong with shredding but it does become boring and repetitive..i would rather hear a nice solo with speed(randy rhoades, he played fast but not so fast) and melody rather than some guy wanking off(shredding) all over the guitar neck

Hey, I don't know if you define shredding as slamming a guitar into your head and making random notes ring out for no apparent reason as fast as you possibly can, but shredding can be just as varied as anything else (and yes, Rhandy Rhoads has shredded in his life, don't deny it).

what are you talkin bout..shredding is basiicaly playing really fast arpeggios and scales and if its not then wat the hell is it?..name a couple of solos that randy "shreds" in..mr crowley is about the only..the rest of his stuff is either melodic or jazz and "dont deny it" he has occasional fast parts but not throught the whole solo

that's true that it's playing really fast scales and arpeggios, but just because it's really fast doesn't mean it's repetitive and boring. Mr> Crowley is what I was talking about...and that extremely fast part of the crazy train solo counts too.

Not that I mean to insult Rhandy Rhoads in any way, by the way. Let's face it, he rocks. I'm just trying to say that nearly every guitarist since 1977 has shredded at least once.

Ok, that's true, there aren't many influencial shredders, but whatever, I like it, you don't, let's talk about something else.

I agree Led.

The first time I heard someone shred, my mouth dropped open. I couldn't believe it.

After a while, and when you get better at guitar, you realize that all of that stuff isn't as difficult as it seems, granted, some of it is.

But shredding is ok, if done by a select few.
Sometimes I hit notes only dogs can hear.

Definitely not. reducing that instrument to Shred is like reducing vocals to grunts. Of course - fast playing is part of music and can be done on almost any instrument. but its definitely not what its ALL about.

It's not noise...IT'S ROCK AND ROLL!!!

What has rock and roll got to do with shredding?

Shredding can be done tastefully and with excitement or it can be pointless, boring fretwanking. What's great about Satch is that he can play it slow and soulful or just simply burn. 'Flying in a blue dream' is the evidence. Toons like 'Surfing with the alien' & 'Cant slow down' are just downright bloody exciting. On the other hand the 'classical' type shred of Malmsteen etc bores the hell out of me.

Guys, this whole argument is proven to be useless.
I mean it always comes down to personal tasete.
Also as Pantallica said it: when you get better you realize that shredding is not at all such a big deal.

Im sure you can play fast without shredding, I mean look at Slash. Hed hardly be called a shredder but he can play faster than most with just his left hand.

I think part of the problem is you never really hear the good shredders that much (the more interesting ones that is).

Alos, I don't know why you people think Rrandy Rhoades is a shredder. He's not that quick to begin with, and shredding is about more than just speed. If you want to hear more interesting shredding, you've got to get away from pop music. Try some guitar players like say..well, how bout a long list :P
